From folk customs and Pentecost kings to living traditions and cultural experiences - discover how Hungary celebrates one of spring’s most meaningful holidays.
🌿 In Christian trandition Pentecost is the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit, and is considered the birthday of the Church. The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth”, referring to its celebration coming 50 days after Easter. In Hungary, however, it is not just a religious feast but also a special period linked to the renewal of nature and rich community traditions.
According to folk belief:
✨ those born at dawn on Pentecost will be fortunate,
💧 well water drawn at dawn has healing powers,
🌾 and Pentecost dew brings protection and good health.
Pentecost is also associated with the traditional election of the “Pentecost King” and “Pentecost Queen”:
👑 young men compete in skill-based contests for the title of “Pentecost King”. The winner enjoys various privileges for a year, which is the origin of the Hungarian expression “Pentecost kingdom”, still used today to describe short-lived glory.
🌸 girls will walk from house to house singing, decorated with flowers, in a tradition known as the “Pentecost Queen Procession”.
📅 In Hungary, Pentecost Monday is a public holiday, allowing many people to enjoy a long weekend, travel, or take part in traditional events.
