Don’t forget: the deadline for submitting 2025 annual financial statements is Sunday, May 31! ⏳

All businesses registered in the company register and using double-entry bookkeeping are required to prepare and file an annual report by this date. Among other things, this report must include a balance sheet detailing the company’s assets and a summary of its financial performance for the previous year.

It’s always advisable to entrust the preparation of your financial statements to a professional to ensure accuracy and full compliance with legal requirements.

Changes to Hungary’s employment residence permit regulations may be just around the corner. Dr. Mándó Tibor recently shared his views on the issue with Portfolio, one of Hungary’s leading business newspapers. 🗞️

✅ In our view, abolishing the restrictive country lists would be a crucial step forward. At present, only citizens of Armenia, Georgia, and the Philippines can apply for work permits from outside the European Union. As a result, Hungary is missing out on highly valuable international talent and skilled professionals.

✅ We also believe it would make far more sense to issue permits directly tied to the employing companies, rather than maintaining the current system that relies heavily on staffing agencies. Such a change would benefit both Hungarian businesses and foreign professionals seeking to work in Hungary.

We expect the details of the new legislation to become clear within the next few weeks. Follow us for updates – we’ll keep you informed about every important development.

The full interview with Tibor Mándó can be found in the first comment. It’s in Hungarian, but easy to follow with translation software.

This weekend marks Pentecost, the Christian celebration of the Holy Spirit’s descent. 🌺

According to tradition, the first Pentecost – fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus – is also considered the “birthday” of the Church, when thousands converted following the apostles’ preaching.

In the past, this occasion was marked by the election of a “Pentecost king.” The chosen young man became the star of the festivities, enjoying free food and drink wherever he went – and in many places, he was even invited to every wedding held that year.

While this custom has faded, the long Pentecost weekend is still celebrated across Hungary with a wide range of cultural and culinary events. In nearly every major city – including Budapest and around Lake Balaton – you’ll find a variety of festivals to choose from.

Did you know that electronic invoices and receipts are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and accessible to every business? 📲

Under Hungarian law, all companies and sole traders have the option to issue invoices and receipts electronically. These documents don’t need to be printed – they are fully valid in digital form and must be accepted as such by all parties.

There are several technologies available for e-invoicing and digital receipts, and some providers even offer to store your documents for the legally required retention period.

Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, has taken the oath of office during the first sitting of the Parliament.

The new government is expected to formally take office in the coming days, once the president officially appoints the ministers. No surprises are anticipated, as Péter Magyar has already introduced all members of his cabinet in recent days.

Following a landslide victory in the April elections, the Tisza Party secured a parliamentary supermajority. This gives the new government extensive powers, enabling it to amend virtually any law – including the constitution.

The party’s platform included just one key measure concerning foreign nationals coming to Hungary: a pledge to ban the mass recruitment of guest workers from outside the European Union starting June 1.
It remains unclear how this will be implemented in practice. However, we’ll keep you updated on any significant developments – follow Anchor for the latest news.

Is Hungary an expensive or affordable place to live? 💰

If you look at prices alone, it’s actually quite affordable. According to Eurostat’s Price Level Index, Hungary’s overall price level is just 74.3% of the EU average, making it the fourth lowest in the bloc. This remains true even though food prices have risen sharply over the past four years. Rent, on the other hand, is still lower than in most major European cities.

At the same time, average salaries in Hungary are also relatively low – higher only than those in Bulgaria. That said, there are significant regional differences: Budapest’s average income is nearly double that of the country’s poorest regions.

The vast majority of expats choose Budapest. The good news for them is that even a job offering an average salary can provide a stable standard of living in Hungary.

Did you know that with a residence permit for employment purposes, you can stay in Hungary for more than three years? 🇭🇺

This type of permit is especially popular among foreign nationals coming to Hungary for a specific job (officially called “foglalkoztatási célú tartózkodási engedély”). It’s typically issued for up to two years and can be extended once for an additional year.

But even after those three years, you’re not out of options. While the same permit can’t be extended again, you can apply for a new one. The key is to submit your application no later than 40 days before your current permit expires – and you can do this while you’re still in Hungary.

Did you know that Hungarian cuisine includes quite a few dishes with Middle Eastern roots? 🥘
A large part of Hungary was under Ottoman rule for around 150 years, and the cultural influence lasted even longer. That legacy is still visible in the country’s gastronomy today.

Here are two classic Hungarian dishes that might feel familiar if you know Middle Eastern cuisine:
🍅 Stuffed cabbage ("töltött káposzta" – cabbage leaves filled with seasoned minced meat and rice. Its origins trace back to the Turkish dish sarma. While it’s traditionally made with lamb or goat in Turkey, pork is the most common version in Hungary.
🍅 Lecsó – a light summer dish made with onions, tomatoes, and peppers. It’s closely related to shakshouka, a vegetable-based stew known in the Middle East, which reached Hungary through Turkish-Balkan influence - along with its key ingredients. In fact, tomatoes and peppers were introduced to the region by the Ottomans.

Have you tried either of them?

If you want to avoid penalties from the tax authority, make sure you’re clear about what you pay from your business account and what comes from your personal one. 💰

Two key rules to keep in mind:
🔹 Money in your business bank account should only be used for business-related expenses. You can spend it on equipment, materials, subscriptions, fuel – but whatever you buy must be used for your business, not for personal purposes. Even though you are CEO and owner, this is not your money, but your company's money.
🔹 The same applies the other way around: if a business client pays you, the money must go to your business account, not your personal one.

Every transaction on your business account needs to be properly documented, so always ask for and keep invoices for all expenses.
If you transfer or withdraw money from your business account for personal use, it can quickly attract the attention of the tax authorities – leading to an audit and potential fines.
