Tech & Product Update - October 2021

Curious about what the Pi Core Team is working on behind the scenes before Mainnet? Look no further — we’re releasing monthly tech and product updates that will be posted around the beginning of each month with an overview of the previous month’s work. These updates will focus on Pi’s technology updates and product highlights to show the Pi Core Team’s completed and ongoing efforts in developing our product, but this will not be a complete list of all work done by the Core Team during that period (e.g. minor or routine tech updates, community, operations or general business work).

Overall this October, the Core Team spent a significant amount of time rolling out new and updated product features in the Pi Ecosystem, including our new KYC App Pilot and Block Explorer. More detailed updates are as follows.

Pi Network’s pilot KYC solution released

The Pi Core Team has developed a pilot KYC solution that will initially enroll 100 Pioneers per country. These Pioneers have an opportunity to KYC early and help improve our app’s algorithms so that our solution can be applied to as many Pioneers as possible before Mainnet. In the short term, we will gradually roll out more KYC slots for the pilot version than this initial 100 Pioneers per country.

Note that the Core Team is also working on translating this app in the future, so we recommend waiting for its full release if you cannot read English in the app.

Why is KYC important?

“Know Your Customer/Client” (KYC) is the process that verifies identification to distinguish genuine accounts from fake ones.

The vision of Pi Network is to build an inclusive and the most widely-distributed digital currency and economy for all Pioneers. The mining mechanism of Pi Network is social-network based and the mining rate halves as the social network size grows by 10X. Therefore, Pi has a strict policy of one account per person.

This requires a high degree of accuracy to establish that members in the network are genuine human beings, preventing individuals from being able to hoard Pi by creating fake accounts unfairly. KYC thus helps ensure the true humanness of the network.

The KYC data we collect is used solely to verify the Pioneer’s identity and to be compliant with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and anti-terrorism regulations. We’ve never sold any KYC data and will not do so without your consent. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for more details on “KYC data.”

How does the KYC solution work?

Pi Network’s KYC solution is being built through our Pi App Engine as an ecosystem app. Keep in mind that this solution attempts to create a balance between accuracy and privacy, while achieving scalability for millions of KYC, wide coverage of diverse populations, and accessibility.

Our KYC solution itself combines machine automation and human verification in order to accomplish accurate and efficient KYC for everyone. Machine automation will be responsible for image processing, text extraction, fake ID detection, liveness check and image comparison. KYC’ed human verifiers may then have to check for errors. The importance of having and improving the machine automation component are twofold: 1) scalability to KYC millions of Pioneers and 2) reducing the data exposure to human verifiers to better protect Pioneers’ privacy. Your participation in the current pilot release of the KYC app will help improve our machine automation to satisfy these goals.

Specifically to protect individual Pioneers' privacy, personal data — except for data the machine failed to read — will be properly redacted. Human verifiers will see a redacted version of your ID document, meaning that only your photo and overall look of your ID will be visible. Verifiers will then establish whether your photo ID is the same type as you stated in the data form and if the person pictured in your ID is really you.

Note that every human verifier must be previously KYC’ed and any malpractice on their part will lead to their immediate removal from the KYC app. Each Pioneer’s KYC requires independent validation from at least two KYC human verifiers who are randomly selected from a pool of crowd workers from the same country.

The KYC app’s code may also be published as PiOS in the future so that community developers can help add country-specific features and documents to contribute to this project.

Disclaimer: The data submitted, by these initial Pioneers participating in this Pilot version of the KYC app, will be visible without redactions to the Core Team members who are developing this app — we need to check if the machine automation results are accurate when compared with your data. So, it is okay to wait until later if you are concerned about privacy. Also, as this is a pilot, we welcome Pioneers’ reports on security vulnerabilities in order to improve our security measures as well.

When will Pioneers get to KYC?

Through these measures, we aim to build a fully workable and scalable KYC process. Once we feel that our KYC process is ready for mass adoption, the official start of mass KYC will begin before Mainnet launch. After presenting a KYC solution for a specific country, we will then offer a certain amount of time for people to ask questions and perform the KYC successfully.

Depending on participation levels and other Mainnet parameters, we will decide if Pioneers can KYC after Mainnet or not. Don’t miss out! Check into the Pi app daily to continue earning Pi and keep up with our weekly content :)

Hackathon App Ideas

When reviewing community applications, the Pi Core Team (CT) will look for polished projects that adhere to the below criteria:

Current usability and accessibility

Workable and useful utilities

No detrimental bugs

Refined user flow and experience

Increase in Pioneers’ engagement

User growth for the app itself and the Pi Platform through organic growth mechanisms

Community ratings

Transaction ability through proper integration of Test-Pi

Moreover, CT has listed the types of applications we would love to see built. Our list is split into two categories — (1) CT-supported high priority apps and (2) other community-focused apps.

High Priority Apps

Know Your Client (KYC) app — an open-source identity management project that may be country-specific.

Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) app — a governance project where community opinions and decisions are surfaced and made through a Network voting system. For community elections on committee leadership positions, candidates should be able to post profiles, resumes and application materials. This decentralized election organization will allow Pioneers to propose ideas and improvements for the Network at large through proposal submissions, sponsors, representation and review.

Wiki app — a user-facing database where Pi Moderators can post and edit content (text, image, video) to support the community education about Pi, e.g. how to use the app, or how to troubleshoot issues.

Bug Tracker app — a project where Pioneers can post reports about bugs or network issues. From there, others should be able to report their experience with the same issue, and Core Team members can gather more info and report that the bug is resolved.

Ad Network apps — an ad marketplace where the Pi community can pay with Pi to buy ads that will be shown throughout the Pi Browser.

Community-focused Apps

Loyalty program app — an app that local store owners can use to digitize their loyalty programs if they are still using paper cards. When was the last time you visited a boba tea store and they still had to stamp a physical card for you? Well, imagine this store could show you a QR code and accomplish the exact same thing in 1 second through the Pi Browser. Store owners can not only create modern loyalty programs but also strengthen their Pi earning teams.

News app — a crowdsourced news-posting platform where Pioneers can post, comment, upvote and reward others using Pi.

Image/art/NFT app — an art/image sharing platform for community engagement with user produced content. This may include a kind of NFT marketplace/gallery to discover and purchase NFTs with Pi.

Game apps — a project where Pioneers can play games with each other or against a global leaderboard. Features for sharing API will be important to improve the game’s interaction structure. Emphasis should be placed on social integration such as push notifications, leaderboards, competitions, etc.

Quiz apps — a platform where Pioneers can post and take fun quizzes.

Survey app — a platform where market researchers and academics can post surveys that Pioneers can fill out to earn Pi.

Marketplace apps — a platform where Pioneers can buy/sell goods and services with Pi.

Social apps — a community platform where Pioneers can interact with each other, e.g. to chat, date, meet up, share profiles, etc.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) app — a transaction platform through which decentralized loans and tokenization of real world assets (real estate, gold, stocks, etc.) can occur between Pioneers to provide liquidity for Pi assets.

可能大家已经知道了，CMC全称是COINMARKETCAP，是世界加密货币价格指数的第一数据源，你在国内使用的诸多资讯平台或价格平台的源头可能都来自于CMC，而CMC在2020年就被币安收购了，当然，CMC目前仍然独立运营状态。

无论是交易所还是平台，之所以盯上Pi，不仅仅是在于Pi的潜在价值，更重要的是Pi所带来的的影响力和用户量，就好像你拥有数字钱包没用， 重要的是你的数字钱包中有多少币才是最重要的。

在接下来的 一段时间，如果出现其他的平台收录Pinetwork将会成为常态，也不用惊讶。



继越南马来西亚后巴基斯坦加入报道行列

之前我们看到越南、马来西亚等东南亚国家的媒体频道报道PiNetwork，近期又有巴基斯坦的两个媒体频道报道，你可以去youtube或者facebook里面搜索Pinetwork，你会发现，报道Pinetwork的国家或频道不止这几个国家，与此同时，还有各个国家的一些大V也陆续加入报道阵营。

国家级媒体或平台报道Pinetwork将会成为下一个常态，我猜测下一个引爆朋友圈的媒体报道可能来自于非洲或南美洲。

可能最近几天整个币圈最火爆的信息就是这条了，可能你从来没听过这个国家的名字，它是位于中美洲的一个小国，不要以为小国就不会产生影响力或者威力，要知道开曼群岛涵盖世界上最多的大型公司，也许你会问为什么这些大型公司会选择开曼群岛这样的小国？

因为税和离岸金融。

萨尔瓦多宣布BTC为法定货币，可以毫不夸张地说，BTC或加密货币撕开了主权法币的口子，打响了加密货币融合主权货币的第一枪，紧接着，你会听到第二声枪响、第三声枪声，随后便是枪林弹雨般的声音。

BTC成为法定货币优劣并存，共识度高且是区块链原生共存，同时总量有限而价格高昂没办法在日常生活中广泛流通，所以，BTC只是个引领者或者号召者，而能够真正实现加密货币广泛流通与日常生活中的必定是一个具有BTC精神的新币。

冲突与稳定：人类历史的主旋律

也许你会问为什么禁止BTC成为法定货币？为什么又有国家承认BTC为法定货币？

因为人类历史上一直是冲突与稳定交织螺旋共存状态的，从人类的部落形成开始至今一直如此，从未改变。冲突，是为了分割利益；稳定，是为了守住利益。

BTC的诞生给主权法定货币带来了极大冲击，就好像一个正在飞行的热气球突然被撕开了一个小口子，而这个口子正在逐渐变大且无法缝补。

为什么加密货币一定会崛起和融入日常生活，即被主权逐渐承认，是因为加密货币本身的区块链属性和数学根基解决了人类至今都想解决的一个问题：信任。

法定货币本身就是一种局部共识或区域共识，即某个国家范围内的共识货币，一个国家的人民约定该国的货币可以购买物品，虽然这种约定是有主权来制定的，但是民众认可和保持统一，因为混乱所以需要主权来制定一些规则。

合同，也是一种约定，只不过合同额外加了一个东西来实现约定，叫法律，如果没有法律的存在，合同就是废纸，法律来保障合同约定内容生效和有序完结，即保护约定共识。



为什么Pi最有希望继承BTC？

早在2019年我就写过一篇文章，Pi和BTC一样都是一场社会实验，那时候就主张Pi是最有BTC精神和意志的。

纵观人类历史，每个国家的建立和发展都历经几代人，从最初的的牵头人到江山开拓者，再到江山守护者和江山发展者，BTC作为加密货币经济体的第一代奠基者，ETH成为加密货币种类井喷的第二代继承者，Pi极有可能成为普及世界的第三代稳定者，即让加密货币更大范围地走向全世界和落地使用，而不是少数人的游戏和投资乐趣。

ONEPI在直播里面说过，没有人规定必须使用大型设备挖掘加密货币才是挖矿，Pi就采用了节能形式的加密货币挖矿，而且是以智能手机的方式挖矿，没有给任何一个国家或地区带来任何的电能消耗或环境污染。

打击BTC挖矿不仅仅是中国对碳达峰和碳中和的FLAG目标完成，同时这种PoW机制的挖矿确实很耗费电能和污染环境。



PiCOIN剑指稳定网络下的加密货币

Pi APP 6月9日的公告主张就是我上面说的，节能挖矿且让加密货币分布式散发于用户手中，同时通过超多的节点确保区块网络稳定，打造一款稳定网络下的加密货币，注意，我并没有说是稳定币，因为稳定币的价格一般与美元挂钩，比如USDT或USDC。

接下来的一段内容是我的一段非理性推测联想，没有任何根据，各位仅当作是一段调侃和蜜汁自信般地信仰：

“Pi官方通过可回收图标来表示Pi挖矿的环保主张和环保性能，呼吁和响应加密行业对挖矿的争论与行业变化，也表达了非耗能挖矿将成为一种趋势，而这趋势中已经成长为一颗小树苗的就是Pi，从2019年的种子种下开始，到现在已经有3岁的小树苗，它还很脆弱，但是它具有成为参天大树的基因。”

“Pi选择将图标定在中美洲，是不是就是刚才说的萨尔瓦多？你仔细看。如果说萨尔瓦多是BTC撕开主权货币的星星之火，那么，这场加密运动之火很快燎原，这是否象征着Pi在遵循BTC的精神和愿景，为实现世界货币大流通做准备和暗指。而加密货币运动将由此拉开大幕，因为会有第二个国家宣布BTC或加密货币为法定货币，而每个国家需要的不是BTC，而是一款能够让国民参与和使用的流通型加密货币，如果可以，我希望它是PI COIN。”

“某种程度上说，BTC成为法定货币也为Pi成为法定货币奠定了基础。”

也许，你会问我如何才能达成稳定网络下的加密货币？

大势所趋：ONE PI ONE WORLD的真正奥义

第一，币量要足够，才能尽可能大范围渗透和分散到用手中，BTC总量太少无法在日常生活中广泛使用，所以，此时你应该明白了Pi没有设计总量上限了吧。此时你也应该明白为什么官方一定要1亿用户量了吧？

第二，分布要广泛，既然想达成全球共识货币，那么就意味着全球大部分国家用户手中都有要有币，如果连币都没有如何达成共识？所以你看Pi已经分布到全球180多个国家和地区，而且还在扩散，而且是垂直式扩散，即每个国家的Pi用户量在增加。

第三，网络要稳定，这区块网络的稳定是来源于节点，节点运行和分散运行可以保障整个Pi区块链网络的稳定，也就可以保障Pi的支付和流通稳定，BTC区块链之所以能走到今天的重要原因之一是全世界有分布式节点在保障BTC区块网络，所以你知道搭建节点对Pi的重要性了吧。

第四，流通量要大，就算币量多且用户多，但是如果无法流通或者流通量少也注定无法实现世界货币的标准，因为货币就是用来流通的，流通了才能产生价值、才能产生经济效果，经济是什么？经济就是货币流通。所以为什么官方会经常表达“易货”这个词。

至此，你是否看明白了？

而且，你真的以为“ONE PI ONE WORLD”是什么一币一嫩模的衍生词吗？那你就太简单了，它代表的是愿景远大、明确而简单。

任何一个人持有Pi币，可以购买或支付任何国家的东西，加密世界货币通行证，甚至可能会成为现实世界的通用货币，如果将口号反过来读试试：ONE WORLD ,ONE PI。同一个世界，只有一种通用币那就是PI。

也许此时此刻，你会打断我，是不是想的太美好了？

没错，确实理想是美好的，现实是这个世界有主权国家，这就是加密货币的挑战，虽然加密货币正在逐步与主权货币分庭抗礼，但这个世界依然是主权货币为主导，比如美元。

正如官方首页中的小树苗一样，Pi仍然是一棵小树苗，它还在成长，但有些人已经看到参天大树的影子了，是什么让他们看到了未来的参天大树，是人类社会发展的趋势和人性。小树苗是你也是我，也是PI，所以需要每一个PI用户去保护和强化，如果深情地表达我会说：我爱这棵小树苗，亦如爱我自己。

也许你会说，因为你的昵称是ONEPI，所以你会把口号神化，自私点讲确实有这种倾向，这可能是人性使然，但你仔细想想，我说的是否有道理，难道你不想你手中持有的PI COIN成为 WORLD COIN吗？反正我是非常想！



加密货币还在继续撕裂主权货币世界，还在继续撕裂，当你每天点击PI闪电的时刻，就是在撕裂和挑战，也许你会说没有国家就没有人民，但是人类这个物种有两个特性就是物极必反和好奇心。就是有那么一群人想看看加密货币撕裂主权货币后会是什么景象？

How can Pi be mined on mobile phones without the energy consumption typically known in “crypto mining”?

Pi achieves this by using a different type of consensus algorithm in its blockchain rather than the widely-known and energy exhaustive Proof of Work (PoW) . Pi’s consensus algorithm is based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) and an algorithm called Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA), all of which do not require exhaustive energy consumption to reach consensus in order to secure a ledger. These types of consensus algorithms require the nodes to form quorums and exchange messages with each other based on a trust graph composed of individual quorum slices in order to come to “consensus” on what the next block should be.

Mining is the process of contributing to the consensus algorithm of a blockchain to secure its ledger in exchange for rewards. While PoW mining requires a lot of energy consumption for nodes to “work” to solve mathematical puzzles to help the algorithm reach consensus, Pi mining requires a distributed trust graph. The security circles of each individual mobile miner will aggregate into a global trust graph that will feed the consensus algorithm of the Pi blockchain. Therefore, each mobile miner mines Pi by contributing to the intersectionality, security and feasibility of the Pi Blockchain’s consensus algorithm in order to secure the Pi ledger. While PoW miners’ contribution to those blockchains is energy, Pi mobile miners’ contribution to Pi Blockchain is their trust relationships and active confirmation of such relationships. The heavy lifting of running the consensus algorithm based on this trust graph aggregated from mobile miners is still done by computer nodes. In fact, the Pi Testnet already has more than 10,000 such computer nodes, placing Pi onto a good path towards creating a very decentralized Mainnet.
