The international development and aid sector are changing dramatically, and many nonprofit organizations must update or adapt their operations. Most of those development leaders starting to think about shifting their business model from a donor-funded, traditional nonprofit organization to a sustainable social enterprise. So, what is a sustainable social enterprise? It is an effort to enhance the world and solve complex problems. A sustainable social enterprise, whether nonprofits, businesses, or other entities, use innovative ideas to change things for the better and for the environment and generate both financial and social values.

Since sustainable social enterprises seek to generate both social and financial value, requiring the development of business models that allow both goals to be pursued concurrently. However, the pressures between these goals can make this a difficult task in terms of mission drift and commercial failure.

Our learning by doing training program assists in creating the development of business model innovation in social enterprises by identifying different patterns of activity through which social and financial goals are developed, discarded, and reconfigured.

After completion of this course, the learner will recognize how social and financial goals guide the strategic framing of the business model in sustainable social enterprises by establishing mutually constraining boundary conditions, and restricting or guiding opportunities for business model innovation.
