On August 29, 1965, the Gemini 5 spacecraft was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain after completing a nearly 8-day mission, proving the feasibility of long-duration spaceflights. During reentry, the astronauts employed a technique that rotated the capsule to create drag and lift, but a small programming error resulted in an off-target landing. The mistake stemmed from an incorrect entry of Earth's rotation rate as 360° per day instead of 360.98°, causing the capsule to splash down 80 miles (130 km) short of its intended location in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite this miscalculation, the mission marked a crucial step toward extended human space travel.
