This multi-country research explores how unbanked and underbanked communities in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Uganda go through the process of accessing Digital Financial Services (DFS): what makes it easier, what creates barriers, and where there are opportunities to improve.

Supported by the Gates Foundation, the study in Indonesia spans:

Our designer, Gilang (), recently returned from the Don Norman Design Award 2025, where our work on KaderKita was recognised. For us, the most meaningful part wasn’t just the award, but the space it gave him to question his own role as a designer.

Through keynotes, panels, and site visits, he was reminded that it’s not enough to design solutions for people; we also need to design the processes and conditions that allow communities to shape the answers with us.

As a team, we’re bringing this shift—from designing for to designing with—into how we work with public sector partners, health systems, and the communities we serve.

Last week, we shared our work at the Don Norman Design Award 2025 (.design), alongside many thoughtful projects from around the world.

We spoke about our project “Empowering Community Workers to Improve Indonesia’s Primary Healthcare”, which received a Promising Award this year. The project includes KaderKita, a digital decision-support tool developed for with funding from the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Health and local health offices in Surabaya and Keerom.

Through this work, we’ve been learning with community health workers about strengthening primary care, building trust, and designing with communities. We’re grateful to the cadres and communities in Surabaya and Keerom, our partners, and our Somia and teams who have walked with us on this journey.
