Every year, millions of workers are injured or lose their lives globally from work-related accidents and diseases. Organizations worldwide recognize the need to provide a safe and healthy working environment to reduce the likelihood of accidents, to demonstrate they are actively managing risks, to help protect employees and to protect the longevity and health of an organization.
Since 1999, OHSAS 18001 has been a recognized occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) standard against which management systems can be assessed and certified. Now, a new ISO standard is being developed to replace OHSAS 18001; this standard is ISO 45001.
ISO 45001 enables an organization to achieve the following intended outcomes of Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS):
• Continual improvement of OHS performance
• Fulfilment of legal requirements and other requirements
• Achievement of OHS objectives
