‘Since,’ ‘as’ or ‘because’: Which conjunction should you use to give the reason for an action or a situation?

All three conjunctions can be used to talk about the reason for something, but there are some differences.

We use ‘as’ and ‘since’ when the listener already knows the reason, or when it’s not the most important part of the sentence. We use ‘because’ when we introduce new information to the listener.

Here are some other useful points and answers to some common questions I get:

1. We often shorten ‘because’ to ‘cause’ (pronounced /kɒz/ or /kəz/) in informal speech.

2. Can we begin a sentence with ‘because’? Yes! This rule is a myth. ‘Because’ is commonly used to begin sentences, just make sure (when writing) that the sentence is complete. So we can say: Because I worked late, I couldn’t wake up this morning. Or: I couldn’t wake up this morning because I worked late.

But notice than in spoken English, we break this rule all the time. So if you asked me: Why did you leave early? I could say: Because I was tired.

3. Can we use ‘as’ to replace ‘because’ or ‘since’? Yes, but ‘as’ is less common than ‘since’ or ‘because’ and it should be used mainly in formal essay writing.

4. ‘As’ is normally used in formal writing. In informal english, we generally use ‘so’. So we can say, “The prices are very high, so most people can’t afford to live there.” and “The weather is nicer in September, so we decided to travel then.”

5. Can we use ‘since’ instead of ‘because’? Yes, but make sure that the meaning isn’t confused with the other meaning of ‘since’. Remember, ‘since’ can also be used to talk about time (from the time that…)
