The staff is composed of 22 professionals and technicians spread in the 3 offices : Medan (Head Office), Banda Aceh and Jakarta. From 2001 to 2005, the foundation has focused on sumatran elephant conservation in the province of Aceh - hence its name YAGASU which stands for "YAyasan GAjah SUmatera" : Sumatran Elephant Foundation. Following the 2004 disastrous tsunami, Yagasu has concentrated its ef
forts towards mangrove ecosystem restoration, considering the remaining mangrove forests of Sumatra are critically endangered and of utmost importance for the communities living on these ecosystems, and for the planet globally since mangroves are one of the most powerful carbon sinks with a strong potential to mitigate climate change. By end of 2010, Yagasu has worked with local communities and achieved the planting of 5,6 million trees.
