It’s that time of year again where the Mermaid II embarks on her famous seasonal crossing from Raja Ampat into Maumere. An incredible 16 days voyage of biodiversity, traversing over 1000 nautical miles across 5 different seas, passing through some remote and extraordinary destinations along the way.

... in the Dampier Strait as always delivers lots of schooling fish actions above magnificent hard coral gardens. From “confetti fish” like chromis and anthias bursting out of their hard corals, to bigeye jacks and barracudas circling around, and ribboned sweetlips adding a splash of color to the rich blue water. This time we were pretty lucky with wobbegong shark encounters, even finding a free swimming one

Finishing the trip off with an amazing manta ray encounter on our final dive. Where 3 black / melanistic reef manta rays gracefully circled around us for the whole dive while enjoying their daily spa treatments with cleaner fish. What a finish!

What are seahorses and why are they some of the ocean’s most unusual fishes?
🌊🐎
This detailed infographic by the Marine Biodiversity of Yucatán (BDMY) highlights just how strange and specialized these animals are. Seahorses belong to the genus *Hippocampus* within the family Syngnathidae, a group that also includes pipefishes and seadragons. They are found in tropical and temperate waters around the world, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Most live in shallow habitats such as seagrass meadows, mangroves, coral reefs, and macroalgae beds, usually from the intertidal zone down to about 50 meters. Instead of scales, they have bony plates. They swim upright using their dorsal fin to move themselves forward and steer with their pectoral fins. The tail is prehensile and can grasp objects to anchor the fish in place.
🌊🐎🍽️🍤
Seahorses are ambush predators with a very particular feeding style. They lack teeth and a stomach. Instead, they use a tubular snout to suck in prey with surprising speed. Their diet includes copepods, small shrimp, amphipods, worms, and fish larvae. They rely on camouflage to survive, blending into their surroundings with color changes and skin filaments called cirri. Even so, they are prey for fishes, crabs, and other predators. In their ecosystems, they serve as both hunter and hunted, linking planktonic food webs to larger coastal communities.
🌊🐎
Reproduction is where seahorses truly stand apart. Females transfer eggs into a specialized brood pouch on the male. Fertilization and development occur inside this pouch, where the male regulates conditions for the embryos. After several weeks, he releases fully formed young into the water. Some species can produce hundreds of offspring in a single cycle. This reversal of typical reproductive roles remains one of the most remarkable strategies in the animal kingdom.
🌊🐎
Today, seahorses face growing challenges. Habitat loss, coastal development, pollution, and warming waters all take a toll. They are also collected for the aquarium trade, traditional medicine, and curios. According to the infographic, several species are listed as Vulnerable or Endangered. Their slow movement, small home ranges, and dependence on specific habitats make them especially sensitive to change. Seahorses may look delicate, almost whimsical, but their survival tells a deeper story about the health of coastal oceans.

There's something almost magical about finding a frogfish.
Masters of disguise, sitting completely still, daring you to notice them — and Komodo National Park delivers them in abundance.

Like one of our videographers reported after her one-week cruise on Mermaid II: We had some true Frogfish galore going on as well, with many different species of Frogfishes in various sizes. Giant, Freckled, Painted, Warty and Hairy Frogfish have been spotted this week.

Whether you're hunting your very first one or adding to an already impressive life list — Komodo is the place.

Smaller than your thumbnail. Perfectly camouflaged. Virtually invisible to the untrained eye.

This is why divers become obsessed with pygmy seahorses. Not because they're easy to find. Because they're not.

Finding a pygmy seahorse underwater is not luck — it's a skill. You have to slow down, breathe steady, and teach your eyes to see what your brain keeps telling you isn't there.

Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia is widely regarded as one of the best places on Earth to encounter these tiny gems. Its sea fans and gorgonian corals are home to multiple pygmy seahorse species.
