Hard coral is no match for the large beak of the parrotfish, which researchers have recently found is formed by some of the strongest teeth in the world.

Parrotfish chew on coral all day. When parrotfish p**p out the coral they eat, the soft tissues are absorbed and what remains comes out as sand-a lot of sand. In a year, one large parrotfish can produce 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of sand!!

The Yellowmask Surgeonfish is one of those species that makes you fall in love with Indonesia's reefs. Look for the telltale bright yellow patch around the eyes and mouth, a sharp contrast against its steel-grey body

Like all surgeonfish, it carries a razor-sharp spine near the base of the tail (hence the name), used purely for defense, not for you to worry about as a diver.
You'll typically find them grazing algae off the reef in the shallows to mid-depths, often mixing with other surgeonfish and unicornfish species.
