For a couple of hours last week, the Moon reminded us just how important the Sun has become to our energy system.
The day before the eclipse, Ireland recorded a new grid-scale solar generation high of 1,258 MW.
During the eclipse, solar output fell dramatically reaching just 8 MW at its lowest point.
It's an extreme example, but also a fascinating illustration of one of the challenges of renewable energy: the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow.
Our latest NEST Insights explores what the eclipse can teach us about Ireland's growing solar capacity and why storage, flexibility and smarter energy management will become increasingly important as we transition towards renewable energy.

Collaboration is at the heart of a thriving visitor economy.
It was great for Karen Duffy, NEST Manager, to attend the recent Louth Tourism Network Meeting at Dundalk Museum, bringing together organisations from across the county to share ideas, upcoming initiatives and opportunities for collaboration.
From the launch of the new Louth Tourism Strategy to updates from attractions, hospitality providers and community organisations, the meeting highlighted the strength of the partnerships that help showcase everything our region has to offer. It was also encouraging to hear from Dundalk Chamber about the many initiatives and events planned to support businesses across the region, including the upcoming Business Awards celebrating enterprise and innovation.
While NEST is best known as a hub for enterprise and sustainability, we also recognise the important role tourism plays in supporting local businesses, communities and the wider regional economy. Building connections across sectors helps create a stronger, more vibrant North East.
A big thank you to Brian Walsh and the team at Dundalk Museum for hosting the meeting and for the fascinating tour of The Corrs exhibition - it was a wonderful reminder of the rich heritage and stories that make our region unique.
We look forward to continuing these conversations in the months ahead.

Could simple design choices help create cooler, more resilient communities?
As temperatures rise across Europe, countries are exploring new ways to make towns and cities more comfortable during warmer weather.
One idea? Using lighter, more reflective surfaces to reduce heat build-up.
Our latest NEST Insights article looks at how practical innovations - from reflective roofs to green infrastructure - could help shape more sustainable communities here in Ireland.

What do you think? Could ideas like these have a place in the North East?
