Our article in the Irish Examiner about accessibility at this year’s Electric Picnic
It might not have seemed a big deal to Festival Republic to move the accessible area to a new spot. Put it actually made a huge difference and personally ruined our experience of Electric Picnic this year.
We are so upset that we didn’t get to enjoy the festival like we did last year we did not get to explore the festival and really missed out on so much.
accessibility areas are more than just being able to see the stage.
Accessibility areas should be a place where the disabled community can enjoy the festival in a safe and inclusive environment.
We feel this year the festival did not provide that and many did not use the accessible area as there were a lot of safety concerns with the crowds outside.
Adding to this, there was a foul smell coming from the main toilets that was unbearable at times.
it was extremely difficult to navigate entering and leaving the accessible area.
There was sound issues as the nearest speaker was a good distance away and facing in the other direction.
The accessible area faced the crowd and not the stage which was extremely difficult for people on the platform with brain head injuries, chronic pain and other conditions.
The Brayford light lighting up the toilet were attached to the accessible area and these lights were unbearable for some of the accessibility customers.
Disable customers pay the exact same as other festivalgoers but do not get the same experience.
We are calling on Festival Republic for an apology to the disabled customers and better accessibility for next year’s festival.
