🌿 Slowing Down, Connecting Communities & Creating Opportunities!

On 30th September, we were delighted to welcome stakeholders to BIA Innovator Campus for the 6th Regional Stakeholder Group Meeting, hosted in collaboration with Galway County Council as part of the Interreg Europe SLOWDOWN Project.

🤝 A fantastic day of collaboration and discussion, with a focus on the Galway Gastronomy Enhancement Project and the Galway Hiking Place Pilot, two exciting initiatives supporting sustainable tourism, local businesses and rural communities.

🎙️ And that wasn't all! We also had the opportunity to record Episode 5 of our SLOWDOWN Podcast series in BIA Innovator's very own in-house podcast recording studio!

Hosted by John Neary of Galway County Council, the episode features special guests Gayle Tarmey and Sinéad Seoighe, exploring how walking tourism can connect food, wellbeing, local enterprise and communities across Galway.

We were delighted to welcome delegates from the European Committee of the Regions’ (CoR) Commission for Economic Policy (ECON) as part of their visit to the Galway region during 6–9 October.

Delegates from across Europe toured our facilities, met our technicians and EU project managers, and discussed food innovation, economic trends and the role of European cooperation in regional development.

With discussions underway on the future funding of EU cohesion policy, the visit highlighted the importance of European investment for our region. At BIA, we see this through our active involvement in Interreg, connecting regions across Europe to support innovation, share knowledge and address common challenges.

🌳 A special highlight was our tree planting ceremony, symbolising the European Union’s roots in our region and BIA’s strong commitment to European cooperation.

Thank you to all the delegates for visiting and sharing their perspectives!

A reminder that registration is open for two upcoming food safety training programmes at BIA Innovator Campus this October.

Delivered in partnership with Rural Food Skillnet and led by Dr Fiona Masterson of The Learning Reservoir, both two-day programmes are practical, industry-focused and include hands-on exercises in BIA’s food-grade production facilities.

HACCP Level 3: Implementation & Advanced Food Safety Management
📅 13th & 14th October
💶 €450 for trainees eligible for Rural Food Skillnet funding
Ideal for those looking to strengthen their practical HACCP knowledge, with a focus on implementing, verifying and maintaining HACCP systems, hazard analysis, CCP monitoring and food safety compliance.

Food Safety Internal Auditor Training
📅 20th & 21st October
💶 €430 for trainees eligible for Rural Food Skillnet funding
Develop the skills to confidently plan and conduct internal food safety audits, assess HACCP systems and PRPs, identify non-conformances and prepare clear, professional audit reports.

Both programmes are suitable for food business operators, supervisors, HACCP team members and quality personnel, and participants who successfully complete the training will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Meet Jennifer Nickerson, Managing Director and Co-founder of Tipperary Boutique Distillery, featured in our Case Studies as part of the Erasmus+ project VINTA.

Jennifer’s journey shows how skills from finance and management can open unexpected routes into the drinks industry and why visible female leadership matters.

One piece of advice from Jennifer really stands out:
“I think more women should put themselves out there: apply for the job, give the presentation, make the pitch.”

Celebrating 10 years, the Lidl Kickstart programme, in conjunction with Bord Bia, is a supplier initiative with the aim of giving small Irish food and drink suppliers the opportunity to promote their products and grow their business through Lidl stores across the country.

Two hands-on food safety training programmes, delivered by Dr Fiona Masterson of The Learning Reservoir and offered in collaboration with Rural Food Skillnet, are still accepting registrations at BIA Innovator Campus.

Both courses combine professional education with hands-on practice in BIA's food-grade production facilities and are intended for food business operators, supervisors, HACCP team members, and quality personnel.

HACCP Level 3: Implementation & Advanced Food Safety Management runs on 13th & 14th October; the fee for trainees eligible for Rural Food Skillnet funding is €450

Food Safety Internal Auditor Training runs on 20th & 21st October; the fee for trainees eligible for Rural Food Skillnet funding is €430.
