OK, so facebook suggests I “write something” to engage my followers. HERE GOES:- I was in a what is advertised as a “White Tablecloth” Restaurant for Sunday Lunch recently. The first thing I noticed was that there was no tablecloth whatsoever. The food was excellent but I was somewhat displeased with the service. I had hardly sat down and was exchanging greetings with my companion when the Conversation was interrupted – I won’t say rudely, perhaps insensitively and this continued throughout what was supposed to be a happy get-together. Do I need to be asked by several Staff members if I’m enjoying the meal ? I would say NOT. It’s a serious interruption and I’m eating away which should be indicative enough of my culinary enjoyment. At some point I asked for something and upon thanking was responded to by the obligatory “NO PROBLEM” This is a double nugatory response and = NO + PROBLEM - and should be driven out of service vocabulary. It’s cheap and made me fee uncomfortable. What has happened to the simple “You’re welcome” “My pleasure” etc. Please train your staff to be mindful of what they utter to treasured guests and clients. Oh yes, please state the occasions you don’t use a Tablecloth on your website.

The sibling of the leech is the loafer, The Loafer lacks the sight to see his own opportunities and therefore can only hinder the sight of yours.

As the saying goes, “It gets lonely at the top.” There are many reasons that one feels isolated and at times lonely when they have reached the pinnacle of success. For one thing, everyone wants to be your friend; but since you can’t make time for everyone – only a select few get invited into the cir...

"No bodder" (I gather that means "no bother" ) Again 2 negative words "No" and "Bother" - Please get your Staff to respond with a nice " You're welcome" or "Glad to help" or even "Don't mention it" There are cash desks and Staff members I go out of my way to avoid because of these attitudes and lack of training (or refreshers) .

Did you know that the highest incidence of Bullying/Mobbing is to be found in the Public Service Professions? It is rampant in Hospitals, Schools, Police Service and Health Services. It destroys a team in a short length of time by allowing one bad egg to create a foul atmosphere. Sick leave days increase rapidly and many go to work in the morning with a double or treble knot in the stomach. Therefore, productivity drops despite everyone being apparently busy and mistakes begin to creep in. A “Team” is a complex entity - There are roles and pseudo roles and a Team workshop can go a long way to understanding the complexities of human behaviours within a Group.

Please, please stop asking me “Are you OK” when I step into your shop? Of course I’m OK or do I look poorly? Worse still, don’t creep up from behind asking “Are you OK ?” I’m minding my own business and for all I know you could be talking to someone else. Face me and ask me “HOW CAN I HELP YOU” OR “ARE YOU LOOKING FOR ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR” ? YOU are there to assist – it’s why the job is called “Shop Assistant” Having said that I can’t but praise the custom of going the extra mile to show the Customer the exact spot the sought after item is shelved. This is a typical endearing Irish trait. You’d be lucky to get a pointer in some shops on mainland Europe.

So many empty phrases, even when said with a smile, are in effect a negation. The most common one is “NO PROBLEM” You have 2 negative words there - the “NO” and the “PROBLEM” They infer that there is a problem somewhere because; why would you mention it otherwise. Then a NO as the first word that comes out of your mouth - Wow. High powered representatives of multinational companies are coached NEVER to use this phrase. Instead you just tell your Customer or Client. “Of course” I will do that for you. And “Of Course” “I will be back to you shortly” Please take a seat . When your Client/Customer says “Thank You” do not answer “No Problem” rather say “You are welcome” ONE OF MY FAVOURITE AREAS IS COMMUNICATION – Give me a call at 087 233 68 38 for a one-to- one Consultation or a Group Workshop.

You can book a Team Workshop with me at 087-233 6838 where you and your Team can explore your present situation and look at what you need in the competitive workplace world. After all, we spend more time in the workplace than we do at home and everyone should have an interest in making the most of it..

Some people believe we should avoid conflict at all costs. However, without some level of conflict, team memebers find it difficult to commit to decisions, therefore creating an environment where ambiguity prevails. Without commitment and direction even the most capable of Employees can easily become disgruntled.

Please, Please train your staff to drop some of the stereotype phrases like "How are you" Especially in the retail sector, Customers may be looking for assistence but are still uncertain if they will use your outlet, so the first Question is "HOW CAN I HELP YOU"? Not " Can I help" because that's what staff is there for in the first place (to help). The "HOW" is an open question. It acknowledges that the Customer may need assistence but leaves them free to name an option themselves.

When Team members are reluctant to be vulnerable with each other or if they are unwilling to admit mistakes, admit that they have weaknesses or indeed any need of help at all, we can be sure there is an absence of TRUST. Without a certain comfort level among team members, trust cannot be established and nurtured. Productivity suffers. That is why I always advise regular Team Meetings and at intervals to facilitate a Team workshop at intervals of once or twice a year.
