I wish I could remember this encounter verbatim, but it’s well over a decade ago. In short…
It was 2011 and I was embarking on a quarter life crisis of sorts after losing a job. In an attempt to figure out ā€œwhat I wanted to be when I grew upā€ I made an appointment at FƁS. I remember sitting down with a very warm man who took great interest in me and my ambitions (all zero of them really at that point). He asked me what sort of courses I’d be interested in pursuing. Witheringly, I replied (remember, it’s peak recession) ā€œwhat courses will lead to the highest likelihood of a job?ā€. He took a beat and seemed to read me instantly. He told me he suspected that’s not really who I was. He probed further, exploring more of my untapped creative sides.

He told me I reminded him of his sister. Nonconformist.
Brave.
Marching to the beat of her own drum.

He told me he could send me down the path of some return to work scheme or office management course but he knew I’d ultimately be unfulfilled. When he asked about my passions I told him about my love of film & storytelling but ā€œthat there were no real jobs in that anymoreā€. So he said ā€œmake your own workā€. Returning to his sister, he explained how conformity was near constantly being forced on her, and how she kept breaking free and emerging and giving the proverbial (and sometimes literal) finger to the naysayers. It wasn’t the easiest path but the path that had the greatest chance of fulfilment. And what he said to me that day changed everything for me. I can’t think of any outstanding feats of bravery in the years since, but I know his words and his sister’s story gave me small courages to forge a different path.

His name was O’Connor.
Today we mourn his sister.

Sometimes you can be so deep in something you need a nudge to remind you of what that something actually is

The common misconception is that your brand is your visuals and your visuals alone
•
It’s ok if you’ve fallen prey to this idea... it’s shoved in our faces, from body image to branding, that how things look is the be all
•
As important as these branding elements are, without a solid foundation to build upon, visuals can lack substance and meaning
•
It’s why I *always* start from the brand identity in any branding process I go through
•
Your brand identity is:
• Your mission & vision
• Your story
• Your tone-of-voice

This week’s is on another of the wonderful clients I’ve had the honour of working with through .

is a designer like no other. These one of kind conceptual pieces that adapt in wearability needed a brand that fully matched an ethos of boundary pushing.
•
Beginning with Danah’s name and signature within the concepts of modernity, monochrome minimalism and deconstruction, we worked our own way out from an impactful mission and story.
•
This one had to read different - truly unique, morality transforming, boundary expanding and adaptable. Everything that Danah’s pieces are.
•
It was a real departure working on this brand and I loved every minute of it and am proud to have been a part of something this special.
•
A reminder that if you put the real work into your brand identity first - your mission, vision, story and tone of voice - you can’t but end up with a visual brand that is truly authentic and unique.
•
Thank you again to and for inviting me on the journey.

I’ve been really lucky to be a part of the team for the last couple years as their branding consultant.
•
I’ve been able to work with some amazing clients of theirs across Ireland and the UAE on brand identity development as well as full scale visual brand design.
•
I want to take some time to spotlight some of these wonderful brands.
•
First up is - the brainchild of the lovely Sharon. Sharon wanted to create a unique platform that allows users to create their own personal style and capsule wardrobe. The YSYS mantra is ā€œBuy Better, Buy Lessā€.
•
Our journey started with developing a solid and compelling Brand Identity including the creation of her brand name, mission, story and tone of voice.
•
Next up was visual branding - the theme for YSYS was to be light, feminine, simple yet striking with a symbolic central focus.
•
Together with my super talented visual designer we went through the process of a visual brand quiz, brainstorming (we use Pinterest), mood board creation and back and forth rounds of designs.
•
I’m so proud and delighted with where we landed on this branding. With all having spent so much time energy refining the brand identity, mission and story these visual branding processes just flow in the end.
•
Thank you to Mo and Sharon for including me in this journey.
