As a former Dublin publican, Alan developed an interest in alcohol addiction and in particular, how, living in a dysfunctional environment affects behaviour and the tendency for those traits to continue into the next generation. He graduated as a Dale Carnegie instructor in the mid-seventies and afterward studied with The Institute of Psychosynthesis at Eckhart House, Dublin. In 1986 he was a found
er member of the support, education and counselling bodies for Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) in Ireland and was an accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy since 1991. When a person's life becomes unmanageable, they may not be aware of it themselves and may not seek help until it is too late.
