March Meet The Maker - Why Do I Make With Unloved Fabric?

Here’s just a handful of reasons:

🗑️ Each person in Ireland on average discards 35KG of textiles every year. That’s 2 decent size holiday suitcases. Each. Every year.

🗑️ Of that discard, over 80% goes to landfill, is incinerated or exported - see image of a beach in Ghana for what “exported” means for most of those garments (photo credit Muntaka Chasant).

🗑️ It’s not just consumers, 47% of fibre entering the fashion value chain is wasted before products are finished (OCAD University)

♻️ By making best use of preloved and less than “perfect” fabrics, no signal is sent up the chain to make more. At Convert the aim is to offer those who love textile products a truly sustainable option.

A peek behind the scenes into the varied and bloated world of the maker’s camera roll 📸

These are photos for a pictorial guide to support the keepsake cushion making workshop. They never made it into an actual guide as I decided just to teach that section and it worked out well.

Will they make it into an instruction guide? Who knows. Will they be deleted? Definitely not!

Happy New Year! 🎉

Starting strong in 2026 with a lovely beginner sewing course 🪡

Participants will be brought through the entire creative process in small groups to come away with confidence in machine sewing and repurposing fabrics ♻️

Happening in Carrickmacross and Castleblayney libraries starting next week, it has been wildly popular and both courses are waitlist only!

Looking forward to meeting all of my participants 😃🙌🏽
