I’ve learned more in the first 5 minutes on a site than I’ve learned from some 30-page reports.
The first things I notice aren’t always the things people expect.
I look at:
• Walkways
• Housekeeping
• Storage areas
• Signage
• Access routes
• General condition of equipment
Why?
Because they tell a story.
A tidy, organised site often reflects good planning, communication and accountability.
A cluttered site usually points to wider issues.
Of course, documentation matters.
Risk assessments, inspections and procedures all play an important role.
But the reality is that safety culture is usually visible long before it’s written down.
The environment tells you a lot about the standards people work to every day.
That’s why the first few minutes after I arrive are often some of the most valuable.
