🇬🇷🇮🇪 Erasmus+ Job Shadowing | Day 3

Day 3 took us back into the community with a visit to the Bexcourt Centre in Bailieborough. The Bexcourt Centre works with rural and marginalised communities in East Cavan and is home to a range of community supports and activities, including counselling services, a drug rehabilitation clinic, community gardens and Men's and Women's Sheds.

Our visitors met with Centre Manager Padraig McBreen and Catherine Smyth, PEACEPLUS Coordinator, to learn more about the work taking place within the centre and the importance of community-based services in rural areas.

We also got to spend time with members of the Men's and Women's Sheds and this part of the visit was very hands-on! We made scones together, enjoyed an art demonstration and had plenty of time to chat with members about what the Sheds mean to them. 🎨🍞

It was a lovely opportunity for our Greek visitors to see that adult education and community development don't always happen in a classroom. Sometimes learning, wellbeing and social inclusion start with simply giving people a place to come together.

A massive thank you to Padraig, Catherine and all of the Men's and Women's Shed members for making us feel so welcome. Another fantastic day of our Erasmus+ mobility. 🇬🇷❤️🇮🇪

📍 VENUE CHANGE – Intercultural Food Fair

A quick update ahead of our Intercultural Food Fair on Friday, 18th September.

Unfortunately, we have been informed that our original venue will no longer be available to us for our event. The good news is that the event is still going ahead as planned! 🎉🌍

We will now host the Intercultural Food Fair at our offices in the Bailieborough Development Association building.

🇬🇷🇮🇪 Erasmus+ Job Shadowing | Day 2

Day 2 of our Erasmus+ mobility gave our visitors from the General Hospital of Ilias-Pyrgos an opportunity to get right into the heart of their professional interests. A very special thank you to Minister Niamh Smyth for supporting us in arranging a meeting with the management and clinical team at Cavan General Hospital.

Our Greek colleagues had the opportunity to learn about the operation of a Level 3 acute hospital in Ireland and, more importantly, to have a really open exchange between professionals working within the Irish and Greek healthcare systems.

The conversation covered Emergency Department pressures, increasing patient numbers, triage, staffing challenges, patient pathways, communication between clinical teams and the development of Medical Assessment Units to help ensure patients are directed to the most appropriate care.

This was particularly interesting for our visitors as the MAU model is something they are interested in exploring further in Greece.

We also discussed how new models of care are introduced in practice — from developing policies and governance structures to getting buy-in from different teams and making new patient pathways work across a busy hospital.

There was lots of comparing notes between Ireland and Greece, lots of questions, and plenty for our visitors to take home and reflect on. A huge thank you to Laura Waters, General Manager, and everyone from Cavan General Hospital who gave their time so generously to meet with us.

Erasmus+ job shadowing is all about professionals learning from professionals and taking new ideas back to their own organisations. 🇮🇪🤝🇬🇷

🇬🇷🇮🇪 Erasmus+ Job Shadowing | Day 1

This week we are delighted to welcome five staff members from the General Hospital of Ilias-Pyrgos in Greece to Cavan for an Erasmus+ KA1 job-shadowing mobility.

We started in Bailieborough with a visit to the Bridewell Museum, where Cultural and Tourism Officer Adam Pringle brought our visitors on a tour and shared some of the history and heritage of the area.

We then met with Henry Rogers, caretaker of the Bridewell and Bailieborough Development Association, who brought us to the BDA building - also home to the Blackwater offices.

Henry spoke to the group about the €100,000 awarded to Bailieborough Development Association through the Community Climate Action Programme and the work planned for the building. This was particularly relevant to our visitors, as sustainability, environmentally friendly working practices and energy saving are key themes of their Erasmus+ project.

In the afternoon, we swapped local heritage for some of Ireland's oldest history with visits to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Newgrange and Knowth. 🇮🇪🤝🇬🇷

We’re really sorry, but due to another event taking place in Bailieborough Courthouse on the first weekend of September, we need to postpone our first Retro Rummage until Saturday, 12th September.

From October onwards, Retro Rummage will settle into its regular slot on the **first Saturday of every month. 🙌

✨ Period Poverty Support at Blackwater ✨

We’ve put together period product baskets in our office, with sanitary products available completely free to anyone who needs them.

The baskets are available in both the men’s and women’s bathrooms, helping to make sure that anyone who needs period products can access them discreetly and without having to ask. Just take what you need. 🌸

Period products are a basic necessity, and we want everyone visiting our office and the Bailieborough Business Centre to feel comfortable and supported.

A small initiative that we hope can make a real difference. ❤️
