How long is CCTV footage stored?

It’s a question we’re asked regularly, and the answer depends on the storage capacity of your recording unit and the number of cameras on your system.

At Hall Alarms, we usually design systems with enough hard drive storage to provide around 30 days of recorded footage.

However, CCTV footage is continuously recorded, meaning older footage will eventually be overwritten.

If an incident occurs, we recommend saving the relevant footage as soon as possible rather than leaving it on the recording unit, which could be overwritten.

Footage can be easily taken from the recording unit and saved onto an external USB drive for future reference.

Can I add more cameras to my CCTV system later?

The answer depends on the capacity of your recording unit.

For example, if you have a 4-camera system connected to a 4-channel recording unit, there’s no room to add more cameras without upgrading the recorder.

That’s why it’s worth thinking ahead. If you believe you may want to expand your CCTV coverage in the future, choosing a recording unit with extra channels from the beginning can make adding cameras later much easier.
