Peter Opsvik (1939–2024) was a Norwegian industrial designer best known for his work exploring movement, posture and ergonomics in seating.

His approach challenged the conventional idea that there is one correct way to sit. Opsvik believed that people should be able to move and vary their posture throughout the day rather than being held in a fixed position.

He is perhaps best known for the Variable Balans kneeling chair, originally designed in 1979. Its distinctive angled seat and knee supports encourage an open posture while allowing the user to shift naturally between positions.

Opsvik designed numerous chairs and furniture pieces throughout his career, developing a philosophy of “dynamic sitting” that influenced how ergonomic seating was approached.

His work demonstrated that ergonomic design doesn't have to mean complexity. By designing furniture around the natural movement of the human body, Opsvik created pieces that became recognised for both their distinctive form and their functional purpose.

A workplace that's too quiet can make every conversation, phone call and movement feel amplified. Good acoustic design doesn’t eliminate sound altogether. It creates an environment where people can work, collaborate and communicate comfortably.
