Telling your clients that you’re expecting can feel like one of the most daunting conversations you’ll have in your business!

You’re sharing incredibly personal news, while also wondering how they will react and what questions or concerns they might have.

The way you lead that conversation matters. Approaching it with calm and confidence helps your client feel reassured that their business has been considered and that you have a plan for the months ahead.

That doesn’t mean you need to have every detail finalised or somebody waiting in the wings to take over though! It means going into the conversation with your key dates, the possible options and a clear commitment to working with your client on the right solution.

Session 3 of the SVAI CPD Programme is live 🎓

GDPR Essentials for VAs and Online Service Providers with Eileen Ireland , Certified Data Protection Officer and founder of reGDPR.

Every VA and OSP handles personal data, often in more places than they realise.

Emails, CRMs, social media, WhatsApp messages, paperwork and even the AI tools you use every day all come with data protection responsibilities.

This session breaks GDPR down into plain English, without legal jargon or scare tactics. Eileen will help you understand where the risks actually sit, what your responsibilities are and what you need to have in place to work confidently and compliantly.

👉 The difference between a Data Controller and a Data Processor, and which one you are
👉 Best practice for storing and retaining client data
👉 How GDPR applies to email, social media, WhatsApp, marketing and remote work
👉 Practical guardrails for using AI tools with client data
👉 How to recognise and respond to a Data Subject Access Request
👉 What to do if a data breach happens

You do not need to become a data protection expert.
You do need to understand your obligations and be able to show that you take them seriously.

Whether you are brand new to the industry or years into running your business, this session will help you look at your everyday systems and working practices through a GDPR lens and understand what may need to change.

Preparing to take maternity leave when you’re self-employed comes with a lot more questions than simply deciding when to finish.

How long can you afford to take? What will happen to your client work?
Will cover be needed? How do you give yourself a genuine chance to switch off?

Ellie’s goal was to take several months completely away from her business while creating as little disruption as possible for her clients. To give herself the best chance of doing that, the preparation began long before her clients even knew.

In the latest episode of Virtual Ventures, Cat and Ellie talk honestly about what it takes to prepare your business for maternity leave and why it is so important to start planning early. They share their own experiences and discuss finances, client cover, communication, boundaries and the different decisions you will need to make before stepping away.

That is what the SVAI Summit 2026 is all about!

Our theme this year is Me, Myself and My Business, with a brilliant lineup of expert speakers joining us to share practical knowledge, fresh ideas and valuable insights.

As Virtual Assistants and Online Service Providers, our businesses are built around supporting our clients. The Summit gives us a full day to turn that attention towards our own businesses, learn from experts and have conversations with others working in the same industry.
