Pat Whyte uses ScanInsights AI technology daily across dairy herds. He completed our Foundation Training Programme under Dr. Dan Ryan.
This week, Pat went into a farm to AI cows.
The farm has a heat detection system. It had been flagging a cow as cycling every 21 days. She'd also been scanned not in calf at the end of last year by a different operator.
Everything said: empty cow, ready to breed.
But when Pat scanned her using ScanInsights AI - the calf was right there.
She was well in calf. The previous scan missed it. The heat detection system couldn't see it. And she was about to be inseminated on top of an existing pregnancy.
ScanInsights AI didn't just catch the pregnancy - it estimated the calf's age in days using our AI ageing model. Pat and the farmer had an accurate calving date within seconds for a cow everyone had given up on.
This is why heat detection on its own is not enough:
πΉ Heat detection tells you what the cow is doing on the outside
πΉ ScanInsights AI tells you what's happening inside - pregnancy, fetal age, cycle stage
They work together. But one doesn't replace the other.
If you're relying solely on collars or tags to manage your breeding programme - this story is worth thinking about.
