🚜 Silage Season Safety Reminder

As first-cut silage begins across Ireland and the UK, farmers are being strongly urged to prioritise safety in the fields.

Recent HSE data shows that farm transport and machinery incidents remain a leading cause of fatal accidents, with nine transport-related deaths reported in the UK last year alone.

From checking brakes and PTO shafts to ensuring operator training and safe stop practices, silage season brings unique risks — many of which are preventable with good planning, maintenance, and communication.

🌬️ Ireland’s Offshore Wind Ambitions Face Setback

As health & safety professionals supporting critical infrastructure and renewables projects, we’ve been watching Ireland’s offshore wind journey with interest—here are some updates.

Last week, the cancellation of the Sceirde Rocks offshore wind project off the coast of Galway dealt a major blow to national climate goals. Once expected to power over 350,000 homes, its withdrawal now leaves Ireland further off track in meeting its 5GW target by 2030.

With only five viable offshore wind projects remaining—and just three with secured routes to market—delays in planning, legislation, and investment are creating real risks to Ireland’s energy independence and climate commitments.

As the government prepares for ORESS 2.1, streamlined processes and clear timelines will be crucial. The industry can't afford further delays if we’re serious about hitting 80% renewable electricity by 2030 and maintaining momentum on vital emissions reductions.

🌍 Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2025 – A Major Shift in Renewable Energy Policy

The Irish Government has unveiled its Climate Action Plan 2025, detailing the next phase in reaching a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and full climate neutrality by 2050. A key takeaway? New measures will limit the ability to object to wind and solar farm developments as regional quotas for renewable electricity projects are introduced across Ireland.

🔋 Key stats:
✅ Wind generated nearly 40% of total electricity demand in early 2024 – placing Ireland 3rd globally in wind capacity per capita.
✅ Over 100,000 homes and farms are now generating solar energy via rooftop systems.

🏗️ Lifetime extensions and repowering of existing wind farms will also be prioritised to support energy security and hit the 80% renewable electricity target.

While the plan highlights strong progress, it also addresses local resistance to renewables—paving the way for faster development and streamlined planning in the years ahead.
