President of the Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (FemWise Africa), Sahlework Zewde, has urged the international community to engage women’s participation in resolving conflicts in Africa, and elsewhere. Peace is a process which requires full participation, including the full participation of women in mediation and conflict prevention as active agents of peace and security.
Ms Zewde insisted that the root causes of conflict in Africa were not being addressed in a systematic manner resulting in the perpetuation of suffering due to armed conflicts. On the African continent, women’s significant contribution to, and strong role in sub-national and local mediation and conflict prevention initiatives, continues to be largely unrecognized and weakly supported.
