In her recent article, Katerina Antoniou discusses the potential for to resolve decades of disputes between Green and Turkish Cypriot communities in Cyprus, where leaders of both communities have been taking part largely unsuccessful UN mediated negotiations since 1974. She explores the reasons for this stalemate concluding that the most significant barrier to success is that negotiations are held between elites in private, leaving the public disempowered and disconnected from the process and any potential outcomes. Over the past few years, civil society groups have asked for a seat at the negotiating table, but inclusion has been ad-hoc, preventing any real and meaningful input by civil society to the mediation process.

Antoniou proposes social mediation, in conjunction to the existing UN led mediation at elite level, as a potential tool for resolving the ethnic conflict. Although social mediation has never been used in large-scale ethnic conflicts, there is great potential for success. The author asserts that social mediation could provide the opportunity for civil society to engage in an alternative discussion which may result in new solutions and a better understanding of truly non-negotiable issues. This in turn could allow for deeper democratic engagement and for leaders to be held to account.

Antoniou demonstrates an understanding of the importance of engaging the general public in the processes of self-determination and future governance and writes thoughtfully about the role and importance of alternative forms of mediation when more traditional methods have failed.

To keep the Cyprus peace process alive, the Cypriot people should be engaged and enabled to know, understand, and own the outcome through social mediation.

President of the Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (FemWise Africa), Sahlework Zewde, has urged the international community to engage women’s participation in resolving conflicts in Africa, and elsewhere. Peace is a process which requires full participation, including the full participation of women in mediation and conflict prevention as active agents of peace and security.

Ms Zewde insisted that the root causes of conflict in Africa were not being addressed in a systematic manner resulting in the perpetuation of suffering due to armed conflicts. On the African continent, women’s significant contribution to, and strong role in sub-national and local mediation and conflict prevention initiatives, continues to be largely unrecognized and weakly supported.
