When should you start planning your business exit?

Most business owners would probably say:

💬 “When I’m ready to sell.”

But in my experience, by then it may already be too late.

The best time to start thinking about the value of your business is while you still have time to improve it.

Because building a valuable business doesn't happen overnight.

✔️ Building effective systems takes time.
✔️ Developing a strong team takes time.
✔️ Creating predictable growth takes time.
✔️ Improving profitability takes time.
✔️ Reducing dependency on you as the business owner can take even longer.

And selling your business isn't the only reason to think about its value.

Perhaps you want to:

➡️ Sell your business in 5 or 10 years.
➡️ Pass it on to the next generation.
➡️ Grow through acquisition.
➡️ Create a business that gives you more freedom and choices.

The decisions you make today could have a significant impact on the value of your business tomorrow.

That’s why planning matters.

Your job is not your life.

There’s a common misconception that when you reach the top of your career—whether as an entrepreneur, business owner or senior leader—your job has to become your entire life.

Anna Wilson sees it differently.

She loves what she does.
She loves leading people.
She’s passionate about her business.

But she also loves her life outside work.

Because, as Anna puts it:

“It’s a stage in a life. It’s not the life.”

That’s a powerful reminder for any business owner or leader.

Success shouldn’t mean sacrificing everything else that makes life meaningful.

Your business can be successful.
Your career can be ambitious.
You can lead at the highest level.

And you can still have a life outside of it.

In this week’s Business Spotlight, Anna shares her perspective on leadership, ambition and creating a successful life beyond your job.

🚨 If you’re constantly putting out fires in your business, this is for you.

Another crisis.
Another urgent problem.
Another “I need you to deal with this NOW.”

And somehow, you never get around to the work that actually moves the business forward.

Sound familiar?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Firefighting is often a symptom of poor planning.

Last week’s crisis becomes this week’s crisis.
This week’s crisis becomes next week’s crisis.

And before you know it, you’re exhausted, your team is reacting instead of performing, and you’re spending your days working IN the business instead of ON it.

A proper 90-day plan changes the game.

âś… What needs to be achieved?
âś… Who is responsible?
âś… What needs to happen, and by when?
âś… What are the priorities for the next 90 days?

Because your business shouldn’t depend on you being the person who always puts out the fire.

🔥 Build a business that prevents fires instead of constantly fighting them.

If you’re tired of being the firefighter, maybe it’s time to start planning differently.

đź’¬ How much of your week is spent dealing with problems that could have been prevented with better planning?

A reminder for every busy business owner.

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
— Stephen R. Covey

It’s easy to fill your diary.

Meetings.
Emails.
Phone calls.
Problems to solve.
People needing your attention.

Before you know it, the day is over…

…and the things that really matter still haven’t been done.

Being busy is not the same as making progress.

The question is:

Are you spending your time on what is important… or simply reacting to whatever appears in front of you?

Your priorities should drive your schedule — not the other way around.

So, before your week gets any busier, take a moment to ask yourself:

👉 What are the most important things I need to achieve this week?
👉 Have I actually made time for them in my diary?
👉 What can I delegate, eliminate or systemise?

Because if you don't schedule your priorities…

someone or something else will schedule your time for you.

đź’¬ What is one priority you need to make more time for this week?

07/09/2026

Why are you busy?

It’s a question every business owner should ask.

Because being busy doesn’t always mean being productive.

You can work long hours, answer endless emails, solve everyone else’s problems and jump from task to task…

…and still not move your business forward.

The problem is often not a lack of time.

👉 It’s a lack of clarity about where your time is going.

For the next week, try this:

🔹 1. Identify your high-value tasks
What are the most important things only you should be doing?

🔹 2. Identify what you should delegate
What could someone else in your team take ownership of?

🔹 3. Identify your time-wasters
What keeps you busy but adds little value?

Track these areas for a week or two and you'll start to see where your time is really going.

That clarity will help you decide:

✔️ What to delegate
✔️ What to stop doing
✔️ What systems to put in place
✔️ What responsibilities your team should own

Your business shouldn't depend on you being busy all the time.

đź’ˇ The goal isn't to find more hours. It's to make better use of the hours you already have.

Know a business owner who is always saying “I’m too busy”?

👉 Share this with them. It might be the reminder they need today.

What is one task you know you should delegate but are still doing yourself?

“Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.”
— Steve Jobs

As we head into the weekend, it's worth taking a moment to think about your team.

Are you building a group of people who simply work for your business…

or are you building a team that works together towards something bigger?

Strong leadership.
A common goal.
Clear expectations.
Accountability.
Involvement.
Learning.
And the courage to try new things.

That's what turns a group of employees into a winning team.

Take a look at the 7 components in the infographic I shared yesterday and ask yourself:

👉 Which one could make the biggest difference to your team right now?

Have a great weekend — and remember, great businesses are built by great teams. 🏆

04/09/2026

Your team can only grow as far as your leadership does.

But here’s the question most business owners don’t ask:

👉 When was the last time you measured your leadership?

We measure sales.

We measure profit.

We measure productivity.

But do we measure how effectively we’re leading the people responsible for delivering those results?

Great leadership requires continuous improvement.

That means:

🔹 Asking your team for honest 360° feedback
🔹 Investing in leadership training
🔹 Getting an outside perspective
🔹 Identifying your blind spots
🔹 Working consistently on your leadership skills

Because when you improve as a leader, you create the conditions for your team to improve too.

And when your team grows, your business has a much better chance of growing with it.

So, be honest with yourself:

Are you developing your leadership at the same pace you expect your team to develop?

What makes a team a WINNING team? 🏆

Great teams don't happen by accident.

They are built intentionally — through strong leadership, a shared goal, clear expectations, accountability, involvement, learning and a willingness to take calculated risks.

A winning team should be able to:

🔹 Know where it's going
🔹 Understand what's expected
🔹 Take ownership
🔹 Work together
🔹 Learn and improve
🔹 Adapt when things change
🔹 Achieve more together than individuals could alone

But here's the question for you as a business owner:

👉 How many of these 7 components are truly present in your team today?

You don't need to fix everything at once.

Start by identifying the one area that would make the biggest difference — and work on it.

Because when you build a stronger team, you don't just improve performance.

You create a business that's better equipped to grow.

📌 Save this infographic and use it as a checklist.

Here is a question worth thinking about:

If you wanted to sell your business three years from today, would it be ready?

Would a potential buyer see:

âś… Strong and predictable growth?
âś… Clear financial information?
âś… Systems that allow the business to operate consistently?
âś… A capable management team?
âś… A business that can grow without depending entirely on you?

Or would the business struggle to operate if you stepped away?

The value of your business is not something you should only think about when you are ready to exit.

The best time to start building business value is long before you need it.

Join me on September 30th at 2:30 PM for my upcoming webinar:

I will share the 6 steps to making your business more valuable and help you start thinking about your future exit strategy.
