Dear colleagues,
We have some dreadfully sad news. Dr Eoin Grogan, an archaeologist well-known to many of us, passed away peacefully this last Tuesday night

Eoin was one of the most pre-eminent archaeological scholars of his generation. He completed a BA in Archaeology in UCD (1977), an MA (1979) and a PhD on early prehistory in north Munster (19889). He worked as a tutor and lecturer in UCD, led the Wicklow Archaeological Survey, published by NMS, and was one of the first Project Directors in the Discovery Programme, leading the North Munster Project from 1991. He also became programme director of Irish Cultural Heritage at Maynooth University with Dr Mary Leenane. He was a leading expert on the Irish Bronze Age, a mentor to many of us lucky enough to work with him, and an adept and warm teacher in his university at Maynooth. He was also a generous supporter of younger archaeologists in the field, always available to offer advice and encouragement. There will be much more to be said about his career and his huge contribution to Irish archaeology and the European Bronze Age.

Eoin was a kind, gentle and generous person, he will be much missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his loved ones, his beloved wife Helen, and his two sons Connor and Niall, and all his family and friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Aidan O'Sullivan

Wonderful to see new research on the earliest dated wildcat featured on RTE News. This work was undertaken by Dr Marion Dowd of Atlantic Technological University, Zooarchaeologist Margaret McCarthy and Marco De Martino and Claudio Ottoni of the Centre of Molecular Anthropology for aDNA Studies in the University of Rome Tor Vergata. It features a quotation from our very own Adam Collins, and the results are published in the latest Journal of Irish Archaeology (Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland), which was edited by ACSU's Dr Kerri Cleary.

The first directly dated wildcat bones found in Ireland have been identified, confirming that the species inhabited the island more than 5,500 years ago.
