Working Longer: Choice, Necessity, or Opportunity?
One of the biggest shifts in retirement planning is this: fewer people see retirement as a hard stop.
Some work longer because they need to. Others because they want to. Many are somewhere in between.
As a retirement coach, I help people reframe working longer not as failure, but as a design choice. For some, staying engaged part-time protects finances and wellbeing. For others, continuing full-time work feels draining rather than empowering.
The key is autonomy. Working longer by default feels very different to working longer by choice.
Retirement planning today often involves phased retirement: reducing hours, changing roles, consulting, or mentoring. These options can ease the emotional and financial transition.
The question isn’t “Should I retire at a certain age?”
It’s “What balance of income, purpose, and time works for me now?”
👉 If you’re unsure whether to keep working or step back, it’s a conversation worth having before the decision makes itself.
