Working Longer: Choice, Necessity, or Opportunity?
One of the biggest shifts in retirement planning is this: fewer people see retirement as a hard stop.
Some work longer because they need to. Others because they want to. Many are somewhere in between.
As a retirement coach, I help people reframe working longer not as failure, but as a design choice. For some, staying engaged part-time protects finances and wellbeing. For others, continuing full-time work feels draining rather than empowering.
The key is autonomy. Working longer by default feels very different to working longer by choice.
Retirement planning today often involves phased retirement: reducing hours, changing roles, consulting, or mentoring. These options can ease the emotional and financial transition.
The question isn’t “Should I retire at a certain age?”
It’s “What balance of income, purpose, and time works for me now?”
👉 If you’re unsure whether to keep working or step back, it’s a conversation worth having before the decision makes itself.

Upskilling and Lifelong Learning
One pattern I see again and again: people who invest consistently in learning feel more confident — even during uncertainty.
In Ireland’s changing economy, job titles stay the same while roles evolve underneath them. That’s where people get caught out.
Upskilling doesn’t always mean another qualification. Often, it’s about expanding perspective, learning adjacent skills, or developing how you communicate and lead.
The most resilient professionals don’t wait until they feel behind. They build learning into their careers early and continuously.
I encourage clients to think of learning as career insurance. You may not need it immediately — but when change comes, you’ll be glad you invested.
👉 If you’re unsure what skills to focus on next, that’s a great coaching question in itself.

Leadership Burnout Is Becoming the Norm — Not the Exception
More leaders come to coaching exhausted than ambitious.
The pressure on leaders has intensified: constant change, reduced resources, emotional labour, and the expectation to be endlessly resilient. Many are holding teams together while quietly running on empty.
Burnout in leadership doesn’t always look like collapse. Often it shows up as impatience, withdrawal, indecision, or a sense of numbness. High performers keep going — until they can’t.
What I see repeatedly is this: leaders are excellent at supporting others, but poor at recognising their own limits. Rest is postponed. Boundaries blur. The cost builds slowly.
Sustainable leadership requires self-awareness, not self-sacrifice. Energy, clarity, and emotional regulation are leadership capabilities — not luxuries.
If you’re leading on fumes, that’s not a personal failure. It’s a signal that something needs attention.
👉 If this resonates, it may be time to pause and reset — not push harder. These are the conversations I work through with leaders every day.

Identity After Work: Who Am I Without My Job?
This is one of the least discussed — and most important — retirement topics.
Many people underestimate how much of their identity is tied to work. Titles, routines, status, and social connection often disappear overnight at retirement.
As a retirement coach, I see people well-prepared financially but emotionally unprepared for the loss of structure and purpose. The result can be boredom, restlessness, or even low mood.
Retirement isn’t about stopping — it’s about redirecting energy. Purpose can come from volunteering, learning, caring, creative projects, or part-time work. But it rarely appears by accident.
I encourage clients to think about identity before they retire, not after. What gives you meaning? Where do you feel useful? What do you want more — or less — of?
Retirement works best when it’s something you move towards, not just away from work.
👉 If this question feels uncomfortable, that’s usually a sign it’s the right one to explore.

Skills Shortages in Ireland
As a career coach, one of the most common things I hear is: “There are jobs out there — just not for someone like me.”
In Ireland, that belief is understandable, but often inaccurate.
We talk a lot about skills shortages, yet many professionals already have highly transferable skills. The issue isn’t capability — it’s relevance and positioning. Experience alone doesn’t carry the weight it once did; how you frame that experience matters more than ever.
I regularly work with clients who underestimate how valuable their skills are outside their current role or sector. When we step back and focus on problems solved, decisions made, and impact delivered, options open up quickly.
At the same time, employers often make the market harder than it needs to be by searching for “perfect matches” rather than adaptable people.
The strongest careers I see are built by people who stay curious, review their skills honestly, and adjust before they’re forced to.
If you’re unsure how your skills land in today’s market, that’s not a weakness — it’s a signal to pause and reassess.

👉 If this resonates, feel free to comment or reach out — these are exactly the conversations I work through with clients.

“Am I Financially Ready to Retire?” The Question Everyone Is Asking
As a retirement coach, this is the question I hear most — and it’s rarely just about money.
Of course, finances matter. But readiness for retirement is as much about clarity and confidence as it is about numbers. Many people reach their late 50s or early 60s with pensions in place, yet still feel uncertain. Others have less saved but more peace of mind.
What’s often missing is a clear picture of what retirement will actually look like. Lifestyle expectations, health, housing, and family responsibilities all shape how far your money needs to stretch.
I encourage people to stop thinking in terms of a single “retirement number” and start thinking about retirement choices. Flexibility, timing, and phased approaches can make a significant difference.
Retirement isn’t a financial event — it’s a life transition.
👉 If you’re asking yourself whether you’re ready, that question deserves space and structure. Happy to explore it with you.

Irish Talent Outlook for 2026: What Candidates Really Want
The Irish workforce is shifting — fast. As we head into 2026, candidates are becoming more selective, more values-driven, and more focused on long-term stability.
Here are the top trends shaping Irish talent in 2026:
🔹 Stability matters more than ever
Clear career paths, long-term security, and transparent progression are top priorities.
🔹 Culture & leadership are make-or-break
People are choosing workplaces with trust, empathy, and strong communication.
🔹 Remote-friendly flexibility is here to stay
Hybrid models win. Rigid office-first policies lose candidates.
🔹 Purpose is a talent magnet
Workers want employers with a clear mission, impact, and authentic values.
🔹 Gen Z is changing expectations
They want:
• Purpose-driven roles
• Frequent feedback
• Continuous learning & development
Bottom line:
To attract and retain talent in 2026, companies must be human, transparent, and development-focused. Culture, flexibility, and purpose aren’t perks anymore — they’re competitive advantages
