Europe’s Naval Surveillance Burden Is Growing

The Royal Navy spent 21 days in July monitoring Russian naval activity around UK waters and the North Atlantic.

In May, it was 25 days. In April, Royal Navy ships or aircraft monitored the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich every single day.

Across the first seven months of this year, monitoring activity is up 25%.
This is becoming a permanent operational requirement across all European Navies. But ships, aircraft and crews are finite. Every day spent shadowing a vessel is a day that asset is not available for something else.
This is the problem we built Live Maritime Intelligence to solve.

LMI starts with risk.

A model of the maritime domain predicts where risk is developing: a tanker going dark near critical infrastructure, an unusual ship-to-ship rendezvous, a vessel loitering or behaving unexpectedly.

LMI then orchestrates the best-placed sensor to take a closer look. Where onboard processing is available, the observation can be analysed in orbit and detections delivered in minutes. Radar, optical, AIS, RF and other intelligence can then be fused into a single picture.

And every new observation updates the risk picture and helps determine where to look next.

Predict. Observe. Confirm. Update. Repeat.

Live Maritime Intelligence is in operational use with European government customers today.

Going dark is a choice, and so is being able to see it.
In this scene, three ships are visible together. INDIAN HARMONY and LEO ASPHALT I are broadcasting AIS, while the vessel between them is not.
This is a single observation from CogniSAT-6, captured 500 km above the ocean. The spacecraft acquired a 32-band hyperspectral image, and our Orbital AI processed it on board to extract the information that mattered straight away. Those insights were sent to the ground within minutes and matched against AIS, while the full image followed later.
Two vessels matched. One did not.
That is exactly why timing matters at sea. Maritime activity does not pause while imagery is waiting to come down; a vessel can switch off AIS, change course, meet another ship and move on long before the traditional workflow has caught up.
Many companies talk about onboard AI processing, but few have shown that it works repeatedly in orbit and in real operations. Ubotica has now executed more than 350,000 inferences in space across multiple missions, and that experience is what allows us to turn a single observation into something operationally useful.
For us, this is not a future concept or a one-off demonstration. Orbital AI is already operating in orbit on multiple satellites and supporting Live Maritime Intelligence today.
What changes after that first detection is just as important as the detection itself. If you know where a vessel is now, you have a much better basis for judging where it is likely to go next, which means the right sensor can be tasked to reacquire it, whether optical, SAR or RF. One observation starts to become a persistent picture, and that picture sharpens as new data comes in.

Today we announced an $11 million round to scale Live Maritime Intelligence, powered by our Orbital AI.

Maritime security has become one of the defining challenges for governments. Nations have to protect vast ocean areas, undersea cables, pipelines, offshore energy and strategic shipping routes, often with limited resources (people, vessels, sensors, satellites).

Today's Earth Observation model does not scale. You cannot watch everywhere, all the time. And when satellites just capture imagery for processing back on the ground, the delay matters. A dark or suspicious vessel can cross critical infrastructure and be hundreds of kilometres beyond before the intelligence ever reaches the people who need it.
That is the problem we set out to solve.

LMI is the only system that predicts where maritime risk is rising and orchestrates the best available space-based assets (optical, SAR, RF) to get eyes on it before it becomes an incident. It dynamically tasks the best satellite or sensor, and uses onboard AI to process the result in orbit, so the answer comes back in minutes.

Most maritime tools are analytics. They help you understand what a vessel is and what it has done. LMI is predictive and operational. It tells you which vessels are suspicious, what they are doing, and where they are heading. Then it stays on them, handing off from one satellite or sensor to the next to keep them in sight.

We have spent years pioneering AI at the orbital edge, running hundreds of thousands of inferences in space across multiple missions with organisations such as ESA and NASA JPL. We are proud that this hard-won work now does something that matters: helping nations protect the waters and infrastructure they rely on.

This year, several nations start piloting LMI. The funding lets us deliver for them, and help protect the waters they depend on.
