Great conversation at the Dublin Tech Summit with Sifted’s Éanna Kelly, where our CEO Fintan Buckley shared some of Ubotica’s journey from commercial SPACE:AI into security and defence applications.

One line that stuck:

“The technology didn’t fundamentally change. The geopolitical situation changed at pretty much the same time.”

It led to an honest conversation around dual-use technology, how Ireland’s thinking is evolving, and why Space and AI are becoming an important part of resilience and awareness, especially at sea.

Thanks to Éanna and the Dublin Tech Summit team for the chat.

Going to AI4Space at CVPR 2026?

Catch David Rijlaarsdam, our Director of Space Systems Engineering, on Thursday 4 June at the Colorado Convention Center.

David will present an operational update on our AI-enabled spacecraft. We have performed hundreds of thousands of inferences on orbit, and he'll share what we have learned.

He'll walk through novel applications of our technology such as Dynamic Targeting, our spacecraft autonomy work with NASA JPL which was recently rewarded with the SpaceNews AI breakthrough of the year award.

Join us to learn how we leverage onboard processing, data fusion and sensor scheduling in SPACE:AI, to turn satellite data into intelligence you can act on.

Tomorrow at Tech Summit Summit, the conversation around dual-use innovation takes centre stage.

Fintan Buckley CEO of Ubotica joins Eanna Kelly of to explore how Ireland’s technology sector is evolving from commercial innovation into strategic dual-use capability, and why space technology is becoming increasingly critical to national resilience and security.

This is a conversation you won’t want to miss. As the landscape shifts, Irish companies are facing new opportunities, new responsibilities, and new questions about how advanced technologies move from commercial applications into defence and strategic operations.

The EO industry has a scaling problem.

Space sensors are generating more data than can realistically be processed on ground, while mission timelines keep getting shorter and the demand for actionable intelligence keeps rising.

From persistent surveillance to Live Maritime Intelligence, the need for timely insights has never been greater.

At Europe this Wednesday, Dr.Aubrey Dunne, Co-Founder & CTO at Ubotica, will explore how AI is shifting processing closer to the source, enabling satellites to respond faster, operate more autonomously and rapidly deliver defence/security intelligence when timing matters most.

The conversation will look at where on-board AI is heading and what that means for the next generation of space operations.

Our CEO Fintan Buckley will be speaking at this years Dublin Tech Summit

From orbit to operations: Ireland’s shift into dual-use innovation is taking centre stage.

Fintan Buckley, CEO of Ubotica Technologies, in conversation with Eanna Kelly of Sifted, discuss how Ireland’s tech sector is shifting from civil innovation into dual-use capability, illustrating how space technology is becoming a strategic asset.

Expect a conversation on autonomy, resilience, security, and the growing role of AI-powered space systems in shaping Europe’s future. 🚀

For sixty years, satellites have got steadily better at one job: capturing the Earth. Sharper images. More modalities. Faster revisit. Optical, SAR, hyperspectral, RF. We see more of the planet, more often, in more detail than ever.

But the deal has always been the same. Collect pixels. Send them home. Make sense of them later.

Ubotica has been changing that for years. We flew the first AI inference in orbit on ESA's ΦSat-1. We operate CogniSAT-6, the first commercial AI satellite. With NASA JPL, we've proven autonomous Dynamic Targeting, where a single satellite looks ahead, spots what matters, and reorients mid-pass to capture it.

Our partnership with NOVI Space accelerates the shift. SPACE:AI now runs on NOVI's GENIE smart-satellite platform, onboard, in orbit, the moment data is captured.

The old model: collect first, think later. Imagery comes down, queues for processing, gets analysed hours or days after capture. Fine for glaciers. Useless against threats that move in minutes.

The new model: think first, send the answer. SPACE:AI delivers intelligence within ninety seconds of acquisition. A single observation of Singapore port processed hundreds of vessels, flagged the ones operating dark, all in under two minutes. The image came down days later.

This is what AI in orbit unlocks.

Bandwidth costs collapse. Latency collapses. The satellite stops being a pixel collector and becomes an intelligent agent.

SPACE:AI brings the proven AI stack, with over 300,000 inferences in orbit. NOVI's GENIE platform, built on the SP240 onboard computer, is designed for exactly this: delivering real-time intelligence from orbit, not just data. Together we put more AI on more sensors, with more operational reach. For maritime security, critical infrastructure protection, time-critical surveillance, this is no longer theory. It is operating today.

Satellites used to send pictures. Now they send real-time intelligence.

The Irish EEZ is six times the size of Ireland’s landmass. Securing that with one or two patrol ships? Like finding a needle in a haystack—if the haystack were moving, invisible, and full of threats.
We’re talking about:

Critical infrastructure like undersea internet cables and gas pipelines—vulnerable, exposed, and under increasing surveillance from Critical infrastructure like undersea internet cables and gas pipelines—vulnerable, exposed, and under increasing surveillance from foreign “research vessels.”

A planned offshore wind boom that could power a major share of Europe—also vulnerable.

A shadow fleet of over 1,300 Russian and hundreds of Chinese ships operating with sophisticated submersibles, operating in silence.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing—a $10 billion global issue and rampant in Irish waters.

Narcotics trafficking by fast boats and ship-to-ship transfers—$500 billion globally and over 90% undetected.

Oil smuggling, human trafficking, piracy, and environmental crimes—from toxic dumping to rust-bucket tankers with no safety checks.

The ocean has become a battleground. And we’re fighting blind.

We were delighted to host a delegation from the US Congress at our Dublin HQ to discuss Live Maritime Intelligence (LMI) and how real-time satellite intelligence is transforming maritime awareness. 🌍🛰️🚢

By turning multi-source satellite and sensor data into actionable intelligence, Live Maritime Intelligence enables continuous monitoring of vessel behavior, risk prediction, and detection of suspicious maritime activity in near real time.

Maritime risk doesn’t appear evenly.
It builds, shifts and concentrates over time.

The challenge is not just seeing what’s happening.
It’s knowing where to look next.

Live Maritime Intelligence predicts where risk will emerge, autonomously directs satellite observations, and delivers intelligence in minutes.

By combining on-orbit AI with multi-source data, it reveals dark vessels, anomalous behaviour and activity that would otherwise go unseen.

From prediction to action, in a continuous intelligence loop.
