“Paano ako gagawa ng portfolio kung wala pa akong client?”

Kung aspiring VA ka, baka ito rin ang tanong mo.

Oo, wala ka pang paid experience. PERO may skills kang pinag-aaralan at kayang ipakita.

Dun ka mag focus. Start with SAMPLE WORK. 💻

Here’s what to include:

1️⃣ A short introduction

Explain what service you offer and who you want to help.

Example:
“I support small business owners with inbox management and calendar organisation.”

Keep it short and specific. Dapat alam agad nila kung paano ka makakatulong.

2️⃣ Your skills and tools

List the skills relevant to your service and the tools you know how to use.

For example, kung task management ang skill mo, show a tracker you created in Google Sheets or ClickUp.

Pero huwag puro listahan. Show how you use those tools through your work.

3️⃣ Sample projects

Wala ka pang client? Create a realistic task for yourself.

• Admin VA: create a travel itinerary with schedules, accommodation and transport details.
• Social media manager: prepare a one-week content calendar and sample posts for a fictional business.
• Video editor: edit a short video using footage you have permission to use.

Label practice projects clearly as sample work.

Pwede ka ring gumawa ng small project for a friend or relative for free, like a content calendar or an enquiry tracker for their business. That way, may actual work kang maipapakita.

Ask permission before including it in your portfolio and remove private information.

4️⃣ A short explanation of your work

For each project, explain:

• Ano ang task?
• Anong tools ang ginamit mo?
• Paano makakatulong ang ginawa mo?

Example:
“I created this tracker in Google Sheets to organise customer enquiries and show which ones need a follow-up.”

This helps clients understand the purpose behind your work.

5️⃣ Testimonials, if you have them

Once someone has used your work, ask for honest feedback.

You can ask: “How did this help you, and is there anything I could improve?”

Get permission before sharing their testimonial.

6️⃣ Your contact details

Include your email or booking link para madaling malaman kung paano ka kokontakin.

Your portfolio can be a simple Canva PDF, Google Doc or Notion page. Check that your links work and clients can open your samples.

Keep it visual. As a practical guide, aim for 30% text and 70% work samples, such as screenshots, photos, videos or links to your projects.

Keep explanations short so clients can quickly understand what you created and how it helps.

Hindi kailangang marami agad ang laman.

Start with one useful project. Explain it clearly. Show what you can do.

“𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘥 𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘥 𝘯𝘢 𝘢𝘬𝘰. 𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘯𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.

Sa halos 100 applications ko, isa o dalawa lang nagre-reply. Kung may sumagot man, lowball ang offer or ang daming requirements, exams and unpaid trials.

Ginagawa ko naman ang lahat pero parang walang nangyayari. Hindi ko na alam ang problema. Pakiramdam ko, stuck na ako.”😭

To this aspiring VA, and to everyone experiencing the same situation:

Baka hindi kakayahan mo ang problema.

….Maybe you just need to change how you present what you can do.

Here’s the mindset shift many experienced freelancers have been sharing for years:

You are not simply an applicant looking for someone to hire you.

✅ You are offering your service as a business.

Kapag applicant lang ang tingin mo sa sarili mo, parang laging:

• Ikaw ang humahabol.
• Ikaw ang kailangang mag-please.

But when you start thinking like a service provider, the conversation changes.

You are one business talking to another business.

Ang goal ay malaman kung kaya mong solusyunan ang problema nila at kung makakabuo kayo ng agreement na fair para sa inyong dalawa.

You are talking as equals.

Pero paano kung hindi talaga pinapansin ang applications mo?

Here are three things you can do:

1. Review your application as a business owner

Ask yourself honestly:

• Kung ikaw yung business owner, babasahin mo ba yung application mo?
• Malinaw ba agad kung paano ka makakatulong?

Hindi ibig sabihin na hindi ka magaling.

2. Show proof instead of making claims

Instead of saying:
“I’m good at social media management.”

Show them:
• The strategy you created
• The content you produced
• The results you achieved
• The process you followed

Businesses are not only looking for a list of skills. They want to know how your skills can support their goals and help their business grow.

This is why having a PORTFOLIO matters.👇

3. Create your own experience

Wala ka pang client experience?

Create sample projects or offer a small project to a friend or local business for free. Document the process and results, then ask permission to include them in your portfolio.

…Natapos mo yung unpaid trial?

If you are allowed to share it, add the work to your portfolio.

…Nahihirapan ka sa assessments?

Use them as opportunities to practise your skills and discover what you still need to improve.

But always protect your time. A reasonable skills test can help you demonstrate your ability, but extensive unpaid work can already be a red flag.

Every application, rejection and assessment shows you what you can improve.

Hindi mo man nakikita ngayon, you are still moving forward.

The VAs you see with multiple clients, six-digit incomes and flexible schedules also started without clients, experience or a clear direction.

They also experienced rejection.

They also questioned whether they were good enough.

They also felt stuck.

The difference?

They kept learning.
They kept improving.

Rejection does not always mean you are not capable.
