Newborn sleep is very different to that of babies, toddlers and adults. Newborns donāt sleep in cycles alternating between light and deep sleep.
Instead, they sleep between two states: āactive stateā and āquiet stateā, spending approx 50% in each.
In quiet state, they are quiet and still, with no eye movements and they look very relaxed and peaceful.
In active sleep they look very different; the baby will be less still and will move and wriggle around, often making grunting noises and their eyes may even be open.
Itās often during active sleep where parents rush to pick their baby up because they think they are awake and need something, when in fact they are just making some grunting noises and wriggling around whilst they are sleeping and switching between sleep states.
