Avia Solutions Group subsidiary and regional MRO provider, FL Technics Indonesia, participated recently at MRO Southeast Asia 2026. Hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Dobrica Djordjevic, Chief Production Officer at FL Technics Indonesia, joined the panel discussion “New Hubs, New Models, New Collaborations Driving MRO Capacity” to discuss the evolving challenges facing the region’s MRO sector. ✈️

Among the key themes discussed during the session were ongoing supply chain disruptions, rising logistics costs, increasing pressure on material availability, and the growing importance of regional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific maintenance market. The discussion also addressed the operational impact of broader geopolitical developments on the aviation maintenance sector. Panel participants also highlighted the growing role of cross-border partnerships as MRO providers seek greater flexibility and resilience in increasingly complex operating environments.

“What we see in Southeast Asia is strong demand for more localized, integrated, and faster MRO support,” said Djordjevic. “Airlines increasingly want maintenance capacity closer to their operations, while MRO providers are under growing pressure to maintain predictable turnaround times despite continued supply chain instability.” 🌍

Against this backdrop, FL Technics Indonesia continues to expand its local capabilities in the region. The company recently signed an initial expansion agreement with the Indonesian airport authority related to the development of its MRO facility at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.

Avia Solutions Group subsidiary and sustainable fuel developer, NorSAF, has signed a permanent licence agreement with KBR (NYSE:KBR) for the deployment of PureSAF® aviation fuel technology. ✈️

Created and developed by Swedish Biofuels AB and exclusively licenced to KBR for commercial deployment, the agreement grants NorSAF exclusivity to utilise the technology for 100% drop-in SAF and eSAF production.

- This major milestone establishes a strategic foundation for the development of Europe’s first commercial-scale SAF/eSAF facility, located at the port of Liepaja, Latvia.

- With planned operations slated for 2031, the facility will be capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of 100% drop-in SAF/eSAF annually.

- This timeline is intended to align with the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation mandate, which requires SAF adoption to reach 70% by 2050.

- Fuels produced by the project would be supplied to aviation companies in Europe to help decrease their carbon footprint.

What is 100% drop-in SAF/eSAF?

Unlike traditional sustainable aviation fuels that must be blended with kerosene to safely lubricate and seal aircraft engine components, 100% drop-in fuel has a chemical composition that completely mimics jet fossil fuel, allowing it to power existing aircraft and fuel infrastructure at full strength without any modifications. ⛽

Jānis Kisiels, Board Member, NorSAF, commented, “We are delighted to have collaborated with KBR to bring PureSAF technology to Europe.

Recent global events have underscored that energy sovereignty is no longer just an economic goal, but a matter of national and regional security. By producing sustainable, 100% drop-in fuels at scale using local, European-sourced feedstocks, we are building a resilient, self-sufficient energy ecosystem that reduces our dependence on external fossil fuel markets and strengthens Europe’s industrial backbone.”

Hybrid engines are thought to be one of the most impressive future technological breakthroughs in the world of aviation. ✈️ They can reduce fuel consumption and air pollution while improving engine efficiency and longevity. So what keeps this technology from seeing the light of day?

Well, there are a couple of elements to reconsider: Batteries and electric components add weight. The extra weight directly impacts the purely electric-driven range and reduces the benefit for larger or long-route aircraft.

Maintenance and reliability: adding high-power electrical systems, cooling, and controls increases certification complexity, maintenance needs, and the number of potential failure points.

Thermal management: high-powered electrical units require cooling and restructuring of the aircraft fuselage to integrate everything properly. 🔋

Legislation: approving these technologies will take quite a long time because of strict aviation rules, safety standards, and other requirements similar to those for existing engines.

What about the current progress? Today, hybrid-electric engines are no longer only in the research and development stage. They have also reached the testing stage on real engine mounts, where they are placed under typical aircraft operating conditions to assess their capabilities and potential. This is a huge step into real industry integration, but still a long way to go before we see first hybrid aircraft in the sky. 🚀
