This year's plenary sessions bring first-hand experience from Irish and UK organisations on cybersecurity, skills, digital transformation and online safety.

🔹 Dr Jonathan McCarthy, Head of IT at Munster Technological University, opens the conference with his account of the 2023 cyber attack on MTU.
🔹 Dr Rachel Farrell of University College Dublin sets out how Ireland can build a national pipeline from early cyber literacy through to cybersecurity research and careers.
🔹 Gavin Barber of the University of Northampton shares the lessons learned from implementing digital transformation projects in higher education institutions.
🔹 Mick Moran, CEO of Hotline.ie , closes the conference with a session on child photography and security awareness as an insider threat to academic networks.

Asiera's sustainability programme is aligned with the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate and Ireland's Climate Action Plan, with a target to reduce total CO2 output to 126,420kgCO2 by 2030, down from a baseline of 591,763kgCO2. Most of the reduction depends on how data centres are designed and operated, since that's where energy demand is concentrated and where efficiency investment makes the biggest difference to the overall figure.

Asiera's national network serves Ireland's entire education and research sector, universities, schools and research bodies, through one shared system rather than each institution running its own. In 2025, that model delivered a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions against baseline, with energy efficiency improving 72.6% since 2009, at a time when national data centre demand continued to grow.

The scale of the reduction reflects the structure of the model itself: a single national system serving the whole sector, rather than infrastructure duplicated across hundreds of individual institutions.

Last November, a record 484 delegates joined more than 40 speakers and over 40 sponsors and exhibitors at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney for the 2025 conference, "Connectivity Matters." The programme brought together keynote addresses, expert-led sessions, hands-on workshops and networking across the education and research community.

🎤 Keynote Speaker: Mark Little

Journalist and digital media innovator Mark Little will deliver the keynote address at the Asiera Conference 2026 in Killarney, sponsored by Apogee.

Mark spent almost twenty years at RTÉ as a foreign correspondent and TV anchor, reporting from Washington, Iraq and Afghanistan. He went on to found Storyful, the world's first social media newswire, which was acquired by News Corp in 2013. After senior roles at Twitter, including Managing Director, he co-founded Kinzen, which used human-in-the-loop AI to detect harmful content and protect public conversations online. Kinzen was acquired by Spotify in 2022.

His work focuses on online trust, AI and democracy, and the impact of technology on leadership and innovation. ‘The Last Good Day on the Internet', his fourth book, on democracy and human agency in the age of superhuman technology, will be published this October.

🌍 Ireland’s Open Science journey is progressing

Ireland is taking important steps towards establishing a national node within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation.

Between February and May 2026, the EOSC.ie project team engaged with EOSC nodes and related initiatives across Europe - including EOSC Poland, the SURF EOSC Node in the Netherlands, EOSC Finland, PaNOSC and Life Sciences Connect - to explore how different nodes are being developed and operated.

A new report, Building EOSC Ireland: Lessons from European EOSC Nodes, captures these insights and explores what they mean for Ireland’s approach.

We’re delighted that Asiera Research Engagement Officers Jenny O’Neill and Roberto Sabatino are part of the project team contributing to this important work.
