🚨 Public-Sector Strikes Tomorrow: What Does It Mean for Employers?

With industrial action planned for the 14th and 21st of October 2026, involving over 300,000 public-sector workers, including nurses, doctors, teachers and civil servants, employers may face disruption and increased requests for time off.

⚖️ What are employers’ obligations?

Employees do not automatically have a statutory entitlement to paid leave due to school closures or disruption caused by industrial action.

However, employers should consider individual circumstances and explore practical solutions where possible.

✅ Options employers can consider:

📅 Annual Leave – Subject to approval and business needs.

🏠 Remote Working – Where the role allows.

⏰ Flexible Working – Adjusted start and finish times.

💼 Unpaid Leave – Where mutually agreed.

🔄 Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) – Where available under company policy.

⚠️ What about Force Majeure Leave?

Force majeure leave generally applies to urgent family circumstances involving illness or injury. School closures due to strike action do not ordinarily qualify.

🚨 Important Update for Security Sector Employers

A new Employment Regulation Order (ERO) for the Security Industry came into effect on 28 September 2026, bringing important changes for employers.

Key updates include:
💶 €16.15 minimum hourly rate
🌙 €20 premium for qualifying night shifts
⏰ Time-and-a-half overtime where applicable
📅 Updated roster and minimum shift requirements

There are also changes relating to annual leave, contracted hours, composite pay arrangements and other employment conditions.
