We recently got to work with the lovely team at , a publishing company with the most incredible collection of artwork. Between pieces they’d collected and covers from the fantasy books they publish, they had so much beauty just waiting to be displayed properly.

They wanted frames that really reflected the world of their books — gothic details, baroque style, big and bold statement pieces. We designed a gallery wall layout for their office and framed everything to bring it all together. Walking in there now feels like stepping into another world.

Choosing how your artwork sits inside the frame can completely change its look. At Sumi Studio we get asked about this all the time, so here’s a quick guide to four of our favourite mounting styles.

1. No Mount
The print or artwork goes right to the edge of the frame with no border at all. Clean, bold, and very modern—perfect when you want maximum impact and zero distraction.

2. Window Mount
A clean border (usually white or coloured) surrounds the artwork with a precise bevelled cut-out window. It frames the piece beautifully, adds breathing space, and gives that classic, polished gallery finish.

3. Float Mount
The artwork is raised slightly off the backing so it appears to “float” inside the frame with a visible gap all around. You see the natural edges of the paper—super popular with original watercolours and fine art prints.

4. Slip Mount
A very thin secondary mount (the slip) sits just inside the frame, adding a subtle extra line of colour or texture between the artwork and the frame. Quietly elegant and a lovely way to tie everything together without stealing focus.

These are the four we reach for again and again, though there are loads more options if none of these feel quite right.
