Airlines have always dreamt about having a centralised view of their customers to understand interactions across all touchpoints and be able to deliver rich, value-creating experiences.

However, delivering this unified customer experience with personalised recommendations, content or propositions across many devices and channels requires a true understanding of who the customer is and how and when to reach them.

Today, there is the perfect storm which creates a real urgency for a 360-degree customer view: COVID-19, the primacy of privacy, the post-GDPR landscape, multiple device and channel usage and the explosion of messaging technologies. This perfect storm forces airlines to finally address the issue of identity resolution.

With identity resolution, airlines can use device identity, browser behaviour, transaction insights and other contextual data to create a single view of each customer.

At the start of 2020, the world was a very different place. Airlines had invested in new aircraft capable of connecting nearly every major city on the globe. AirBnB was one of the most hotly anticipated IPOs of the year. Destination cities like Amsterdam, Venice and Barcelona were groaning at the seams, and all the talk was of how travel could be curbed.

After many years of modernisation through fleet renewal, technology updates and product improvements, many airlines were recording the best results in their history. All of this progress was stopped by a single global event that few could have foreseen.

OpenJaw NDC customer, ANA (All Nippon Airlines), plans new long-haul LCC airline. The ANA Group announced this week that it will bring a new carrier to life, sitting between its flagship ANA service and short-haul LCC Peach. The company intends for this new airline "to raise profits by targeting demand for low-cost, medium-distance flights to destinations in Southeast Asia and Oceania."

ANA plans a long-haul LCC operation as it overhauls is operational structure in the wake of COVID-19. The company sees an irrecoverable shift in demand profile and is adjusting in kind.

Everyone who works in aviation is told that it is a "cyclical" business. However, in the years up to 2019, there was an unprecedented long run of profits and general good news for aviation. 4.5bn passengers flew on commercial aircraft flights. Over 100,000 commercial flights happened each day. It was hard to see what event or series of events could bring that current cycle off its historic highs.

Along came the pandemic; everything came to a grinding halt.

The last six months have been hard for everyone in travel. We are collectively living through the biggest crisis in travel in our lifetime. We have all had to make difficult decisions. Decisions that we thought we would never have to make.

Like everyone else, remote working became the norm. Fortunately for OpenJaw, we transitioned all of our systems into the Cloud several years ago to facilitate shared financial & HR management, distributed development and delivery across our 6 international offices and customers. And as heavy users of tools such as Google Hangouts, Lifesize and Zoom video conferencing, we found that the transition to full working from home was seamless.
OpenJaw has created a four-phase framework through the lockdown phase of the pandemic as a planning tool – you might find it helpful too.
