Competing with over 100 submissions to create a "monumental archway" to The 1889 World's Fair in Paris, Gustave Eiffel and his team, after three years of redesigning, finally put spade to soil and began construction. Since its birth, it has been repainted 18 times, has been mocked, and was considered so ugly that author Guy de Maupassant insisted on having his lunch at the base of the tower, facing the sky, since this was the only place in Paris that he could avoid seeing it! The structure was doomed to be torn down after 20 years, but the tall tower proved itself useful for transmitting telegrams and radiowaves, plus, the ability to jam and intercept German communications during WWI came in handy too.
