Join one of the National Museum of Ireland’s foremost experts on folk customs and festivals, will deliver a special talk in the run-up to St. Valentine’s Day exploring love, marriage and matchmaking traditions at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park.

Clodagh Doyle, Keeper of the Folklife collection at the National Museum of Ireland will give an in-person talk about matchmaking, marriage and the traditions in between as we approach St. Valentine's Day in this talk entitled 'Take me to the Church: Love and Marriage in the Calendar Year'.

The celebration of Valentine’s Day is a modern construct, but love and marriage customs have traditionally played a significant role in Irish society.

2pm - 3pm | Saturday 8 February 2025

This is a free event, suitable for adults but BOOKING IS REQUIRED as spaces are limited.

The harp is one of the most enduring symbols of Ireland and has been found on coins, tokens, and medals since the 16th century. The harp's distinctive shape evokes the important role of bards and musicians in ancient Ireland.
