Happy summer solstice to one and all; the weather seems to finally be taking a turn for the better. This image is one of the first photos of the solstice sunset illuminating the chamber of Cairn G in Carrowkeel, taken in 1997.

The opening over the entrance may well be the prototype for the famous roof-box at Newgrange. Though the opening allows the sun to enter each year, the axis of the monument is oriented to the position of the major lunar standstills. The monument seems to be designed to observe the movements of both the sun and moon.
