What happens when you build AI into a website as part of the customer experience rather than adding it as an afterthought? That was part of the thinking behind our work with Connect the Dots Tours of Ireland.

The project combined website strategy, digital marketing and AI integration to create a stronger online experience for people researching and planning tours of Ireland.

One of the key additions was an AI-powered website assistant, designed to help potential customers find information and ask questions as they explore the site.

It’s a good example of how we think AI should be used in websites: not because AI is fashionable, but because it can solve a genuine customer or business problem.

We’ve put together the full case study covering the project and the thinking behind it.

Not sure where to start with the EU AI Act?

Denis Jastrzebski recommends a useful practical resource: the EU AI Act Compliance Checker.

It can help businesses get a clearer sense of which parts of the Act may apply to how they’re using AI and what obligations they may need to think about.

It’s not a replacement for proper legal or compliance advice, but it’s a very useful starting point if you’re trying to work out what the EU AI Act actually means for your organisation.

AI compliance isn’t only about what happens inside your organisation.

Alan Thornton highlights the importance of understanding whistleblowing and reporting processes when it comes to AI use and compliance.

Concerns can potentially be raised by people inside or outside an organisation, so anyone responsible for AI governance should understand how those processes work and what happens if a complaint is made.

Alan’s advice is simple: if you’re overseeing AI compliance, familiarise yourself with the whistleblowing framework as part of that responsibility.

It’s another reminder that AI governance isn’t just about policies and procedures - it’s also about being prepared to respond when concerns are raised.

How can you make decisions about AI if you don’t understand how it works? 🤖

Denis Jastrzebski and Alan Thornton discuss AI literacy and why the right training matters across an organisation.

Not everyone needs to become an AI expert. But people should have an appropriate understanding of AI based on their role and how it’s being used in the business.

And that includes leadership. As Alan asks: how can board members make informed decisions about AI and how it should be used if they don’t understand the technology themselves?

AI literacy isn’t just for the people using the tools - it matters for the people making decisions about them too.

Does the EU AI Act only really matter for big organisations?

Denis Jastrzebski and Alan Thornton explain why business size isn’t the main issue , the use case is.

A small business using AI in a particular way can face the same types of compliance obligations as a much larger organisation using AI in the same way.

So the key questions are:

🔹 What AI are you using?
🔹 What are you using it for?
🔹 What level of risk does that create?
🔹 What responsibilities come with it?

The takeaway: EU AI Act compliance is driven by how AI is used, not the size of the organisation using it.

Do you know where AI is actually being used in your business? 🤖

Denis Jastrzebski and Alan Thornton discuss two practical steps every business should consider: an AI tool inventory and human oversight.

That means knowing:

🔹 What AI tools or technologies are being used
🔹 What they’re being used for
🔹 How they’re being used
🔹 Who is responsible

And for high-stakes decisions or outputs, there should be a clear rule that a human makes the final call. You can’t manage AI properly if you don’t know where and how it’s being used.

Are your employees using AI for work through their own personal accounts? 🤖

Alan Thornton explains the risks of Shadow AI when staff use AI tools without the business necessarily knowing or having proper oversight.

Using personal AI accounts for work can create issues around data, privacy, security and accountability.

A better approach is to use approved business AI accounts, with clear policies and controls around how AI is used.

The aim isn’t to stop people using AI, it’s to make sure it’s being used safely and responsibly.

What exactly is the EU AI Act and what does it mean for your business? 🤖

In this clip from Episode 5 of Digital & AI Decoded, Alan Thornton and Denis Jastrzebski explain the EU AI Act in simple terms, including the risk-based approach at the heart of the legislation.

The basic principle is straightforward: the greater the potential risk from an AI system, the greater the rules and responsibilities around its use.

For businesses, a good starting point is understanding where you're already using AI, what you're using it for and what level of risk that might involve.
