🌀️ Storm Amy – Final Update (Monday Morning) 🌀️

All parts of the Net1 wireless network are operating normally this morning, following the passage of Storm Amy.

Some customers in the Fermanagh area may still experience higher latency due to an ongoing issue affecting a third-party fibre supplier in the Omagh area.

For customers on Fibre to the Home (FTTH) connections β€” if your service remains offline, please report it to us by phone on 042 9340104 or by email at [email protected] We will ensure your fault is passed on to the relevant fibre provider for investigation and repair.

Please be aware that residential fibre β€” and in many cases business fibre β€” connections do not include a formal SLA, and providers may apply force majeure conditions following severe weather events.

Thank you to all our customers for your patience and understanding, and to everyone who worked through the storm to keep networks running safely. πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ’‘

πŸŒͺ️ Storm Amy Update πŸŒͺ️

We are currently seeing widespread power cuts across the region as Storm Amy continues. Many of our high sites are now running on emergency battery power to keep services online.

At this time, we are observing around 1,600 customers offline compared to normal, which we believe is mainly due to power outages in individual homes and businesses.

In addition, a large number of customers on fibre connections are reporting outages. Please note that all fibre networks are run and managed by OpenEir, NBI, or SIRO for all internet providers. Unfortunately, there is no formal SLA on residential fibre services, so restoration times can vary. We are reporting all faults directly to the relevant fibre provider as they arise.

Our network remains operational, and we will continue to update here on any major network faults once conditions allow safe access.

Please stay safe, and thank you for your patience during the storm. πŸ’‘πŸŒ§οΈ

⚠️ Service Update – Bandwidth Conservation Requested ⚠️

Dear Customers,

Our Brougher Mountain site in Fermanagh is currently impacted by a major outage on our upstream provider GTT’s fibre feed in Omagh. This feed normally carries a large portion of our traffic. Engineers from GTT are on-site this evening replacing suspected faulty hardware to restore service.

In the meantime, traffic is being carried over a temporary microwave backup link from Cavan, which provides only a small fraction of our normal bandwidth. This means internet speeds will be slower and connections may feel congested.

πŸ‘‰ To help us keep everyone online until full service is restored, we ask all customers to conserve bandwidth β€” please avoid heavy streaming, large downloads, or non-essential usage for now.

We apologise for the disruption and will keep you updated as soon as there is progress from GTT.

Our main fibre feed to customers in the area is currently down. Service is currently via our backup circuit from Cavan which does not have the same capacity. We ask customers to conserve bandwidth by not using data intensive applications until this fibre feed is fixed, and until this is so, customers will experience a slower than usual service. We apologise for this and assure you that we are working with our service provider to get this issue resolved.

🚨 We’ve joined 83 organisations from across Europe to oppose a quiet but powerful push to reshape the internet as we know it β€” all under the banner of the upcoming .

Some of the largest telecom giants, operating in multiple EU countries with magenta logos, orange slogans, and a fondness for bulls and circles, want to start charging streaming services and online platforms simply for delivering traffic to you.

They call it fair contribution.
We call it what it is:
πŸ’° Double-dipping β€” charging both users and content providers
πŸ“‰ A threat to smaller creators and cultural voices
πŸ”’ An attack on net neutrality and the open internet

If this goes ahead, it’s not the platforms who’ll suffer β€” it’s you, the viewer, the listener, the small business owner, the artist β€” through higher costs, slower access, and less choice.

πŸ“’ We’re calling on the European Commission to protect your digital freedom, not hand it over to those who already profit handsomely from our connections.

The internet should remain open, creative, and competitive β€” not carved up by gatekeepers.

πŸ“’ Network Update – Dunleer & Surrounding Areas

We want to update customers in the Dunleer, Togher, and Castlebellingham areas who may be experiencing broadband issues.

πŸ› οΈ The issue lies with a major fibre transport failure between Dunleer and Drogheda, affecting thousands of connections across the Northeast. This is part of the national OpenEir infrastructure, which underpins all fibre broadband services in the area – regardless of provider.

πŸ“ The fault has been ongoing since Tuesday 17th June and continues to impact over 2,900 customers.

🧱 Earlier updates from OpenEir stated that a Traffic Management Plan and Wayleave Licence were required to complete repairs – this part of the update has since been removed, but the issue remains unresolved.

πŸ” Restore Estimate: Now extended to Friday 20th June at 11:00am, though this may change.

πŸ’‘ Why does this happen?
Fibre broadband, although fast, is built on residential-grade infrastructure. It’s highly dependent on long-haul transport routes β€” when one fails, entire regions go offline.

🌐 At Net1, we do things differently.

We offer an optional Never Lost failover service, which keeps you online even if fibre is down. It uses our independently owned Fixed Wireless Network, separate from OpenEir, to seamlessly keep your connection alive.

βœ… If you're a business, remote worker, or simply want rock-solid broadband, get in touch about Never Lost by Net1.

If you’re currently affected, we apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience while OpenEir works to restore service.

Net1 Update – Post-Storm Update
(07/02/2025)

We’re pleased to report that all Net1 fixed wireless sites have been fully restored since early this week, and our wireless network is now back to pre-storm conditions. Our dedicated teams have been working tirelessly to repair damage at customer premises, including broken antenna poles and twisted aerials. As of today, we have resolved over 90% of the fault tickets received, with nearly all fixed wireless customers now back online.

Unfortunately, the situation with fibre broadband remains challenging. As an ISP, Net1 provides internet services over fibre networks owned and maintained by SIRO, OpenEir, and NBI. These networks suffered significant storm damage, and we are receiving limited updates on repair timelines. Based on what we’re seeing, we expect it could take several weeks before fibre services return to pre-storm levels, but we have no direct control over these repairs.

Addressing Social Media Comments
We are aware of some misinformed posts on social media blaming Net1 for ongoing fibre outages. To be absolutely clear:

We are doing everything in our power to reconnect customers as quickly as possible.
We have no control over fibre repairs, as these networks are owned and maintained by SIRO, OpenEir, and NBIβ€”not Net1.
This applies to ALL ISPs, as no internet provider in Ireland can repair broken fibre poles or cables belonging to these networks.
We understand the frustration of customers still affected by fibre outages, and we share your frustration. If we could fix it ourselves, we would. In the meantime, we continue to push for updates from the fibre providers and will keep you informed as soon as we receive any new information.

Reactivating Fixed Wireless for Affected Customers
Given the widespread fibre outages, we are exploring the possibility of reactivating some of our decommissioned wireless base stations in areas where fibre had previously made them financially unviable. Many customers who switched to fibre may still have their old Net1 antenna installed. If feasible, we may be able to restore service for affected fibre customers via our fixed wireless network.

This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis over the coming week, and we will provide updates accordingly. Re-enabling service in these areas would require site visits, and in some cases, a small reactivation fee to cover spectrum licensing and operational costs.

We appreciate your patience and will keep you informed as we work through these challenges.
