With six 600-tonne cold stores, a grading and packing line, and a farm shop, Hickey’s Home Farm in Ardee, Co. Louth is a significant user of electricity.🚜🥔🥕

In 2022, the Hickey’s took a big step towards reducing their reliance on grid electricity with the installation of a 380 kWp solar PV system.

Since then, they’ve added a further 200 kWp of solar, along with an EV charger, and have plans to expand their solar capacity further as they work towards making the yard increasingly energy self-sufficient.

As Gerard Hickey puts it, solar is a “no-brainer” on farms. ☀️

☀️ Good news on energy grants!

A new package of enhanced renewable energy and retrofit grants has been announced, aimed at helping households, farms and businesses reduce energy costs, lower dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen Ireland’s energy security.

The new grant limits are a welcome development for farmers, helping to address the gap left by recent restrictions to TAMS 3.

🏡🔋 Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but many Irish households use a significant amount of their electricity in the evening, when everyone is home.

A battery allows you to store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it later, helping you get more from your solar PV system.

But not every home needs one. It depends on your energy usage, evening consumption, and budget.📊

During your consultation, our team will look at your energy needs and help you decide whether battery storage makes financial sense for your home. Contact our team for a free, no-obligation quote: https://localpower.ie/get-a-quote/

Poultry farmer Nigel Flynn farms 145,000 broiler birds just outside Clones, Co. Monaghan. With ventilation, lighting, feeders and water pumps running throughout the day, electricity is a significant cost on the farm.🐔

In 2019, he installed his first 50kW solar PV system and expanded the system in 2024, bringing total capacity to 74kW, alongside 16.6kWh of battery storage. ☀️🔋
