Economic, Social and Community Impact Assessment for Ennistymon Digital Hub

In order to determine the overall impact of the Ennistymon Digital Hub and Multi Service centre on the town of Ennistymon and its environs, the Digital & Broadband Department commissioned an Economic, Social and Community Impact Assessment for Ennistymon Digital Hub. The Ennistymon Digital Hub, part of Clare County Council’s "Digiclare" initiative, aims at supporting rural communities by offering flexible, affordable office spaces. The Hub, opened in December 2019, serves as a community and enterprise hub, providing hot desks, office space, and meeting rooms. Due to increasing demand, it expanded in 2022, adding more office pods and desks.

The key findings are:

Social & Community Benefits
Supports remote work for both local residents and visitors.
Enhances work-life balance by reducing commuting times.
Encourages tourism and economic activity in North Clare (notably benefiting businesses in Lahinch).
Contributes to town rejuvenation, especially on Parliament Street.

Economic Impact
76 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs created (direct & indirect).
Annual economic impact of €3.8 million.
Generates €586K in tax revenue.
67% of relocated workers identified the Hub as a key factor in their move.
Encourages local spending—89% of users shop locally more frequently.

Tourism & Remote Work ("Workcation")
60% of summer bookings (Aug 2024 sample) came from tourists & holidaymakers.
Strengthens Ennistymon’s appeal as a remote working destination.

Sustainability & Policy Alignment
Reduces carbon footprint by cutting commuting.
Supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including good health, economic growth, and climate action.
Aligns with local and national policies promoting digital hubs and sustainable work solutions.

Conclusion:
The Ennistymon Hub has had significant social, economic, and environmental benefits, supporting rural employment, local businesses, and sustainable development while promoting a better work-life balance for professionals.

In the wake of Storm Eowyn, which left many homes without power or broadband, DigiClare's hubs have become a vital resource for the community. Our hubs are providing a reliable space for individuals to continue their work and stay connected.

To accommodate the increased demand this week, we opened up training and meeting rooms, to create additional hot-desk capacity to ensure everyone had a place to work.

Here's some feedback we got from users this week. Some of them used our hubs for the first time.

"The Miltown Malbay HUB was a lifesaver during the power outages – couldn't have stayed connected without it."

"Thanks to the Ennis HUB, I managed to keep working despite having no power or broadband. Truly a blessing!"

We're thrilled to see power being restored to more homes in Clare but our hubs are always here, providing a productive space whenever you need it.

Our hubs in Inagh and Feakle are back in operation. Power and broadband have been restored to both sites.
