The main bridge crossing the river into Waterford city at the train station is a cantilever bridge - it opens up to let ships pass underneath .There are sides to the bridge and when the bridge opens up the road section tilts into the bridge sub base The sub bases are large open concrete chambers , the bottom level of which are about 20 metres below water level. Our Cyclovac had the task of sucking out the water from the base of the chamber on both sides of the basement in the bridge aided by a hose suspended from a city crane.

This is pretty specialised work and is critical because …..

1. It keeps the counterweight and pivot mechanisms accessible for inspection and maintenance
2. It prevents corrosion and structural degradation of steel components
3. It ensures the bridge can operate smoothly and safely when opening.
