“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”

Tech Monday with Niall
Here's a question we get asked all the time..."Is Google Translate ok for translating my book or journal article into another language?"

The short answer is no. Google Translate provides what is known as “machine translation”. So it's generally accurate (note the word generally) for translating individual words or short phrases. However, at sentence level, it will nearly always require further editing to get the syntax and grammar right. As with a lot of internet services, and particularly free services, humans need to make the specific decisions on words, phrases and sentences. The old ways are the best ways...

We do a lot of work with The Informed Farmer Consultancy in Dublin and had a conversation yesterday with the founder, Anne, on the theme of the recent fuel protests around he country and how this might all play out in the medium to longer term. One theme that deserves a greater lens is that of su***de amongst the Irish farming community. We believe the issue of su***de within the Irish farming community is a significant public health challenge that warrants more forensic attention.

Evidence from a study conducted by the School of Agriculture and Food Science at University College Dublin indicates that approximately 23.4% of Irish farmers are susceptible to suicidal ideation, based on a survey of 256 individuals [1]. On a broader scale, the Republic of Ireland witnesses an average of 26 farmer su***des annually [2].

Analysis of coronial data spanning from 2015 to 2018 reveals that male farmers represented 8% of all male probable su***des in the Republic of Ireland [3]. While the overall su***de rate among farmers (31.5 deaths per 100,000) was not significantly higher than that of non-farmers (23.6 per 100,000), a distinct disparity emerges when scrutinising age-specific data [3].

A critical concern pertains to older farmers, as evidenced by the stark contrast in su***de rates. Farmers aged over 65 exhibited a rate of 29.2 deaths per 100,000, which is more than twice the rate observed among non-farmers in the same age bracket (14.3 deaths per 100,000) [4]. This disparity underscores the heightened vulnerability of older male farmers to su***de risks.

The prevalence of mental health issues among farmers must be contextualised within a broader framework. Studies consistently highlight alarming rates of mental health challenges within the farming community, including high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms [1]. Furthermore, sleep disturbances and burnout are prevalent issues among Irish farmers, with significant implications for their mental and physical well-being [6].

Various stressors unique to the farming profession contribute to the mental health vulnerabilities of Irish farmers. Financial strain, concerns regarding government policies related to climate change, and apprehensions about farm sustainability are identified as the primary stress-inducing factors impacting farmers [1]. The evolving landscape of agricultural policies and regulations introduces a sense of unpredictability and ambiguity, jeopardising the financial stability and core identity of farmers [7].

Given the distinct challenges faced by farmers in accessing mental health services, tailored support mechanisms are imperative. Farmers are considered a hard-to-reach demographic due to occupational constraints, limited regional mental health resources, and the prevailing culture of stoicism and self-reliance in farming communities [8]. Su***de prevention efforts should be tailored to the unique cultural characteristics of the farming population, emphasising education, training initiatives, and community-centered interventions to address the escalating rates of mental health issues and su***de attempts among farmers [8].

This is a national issue. An immediate issue.

A Few Words on Emerging Technological Challenges in Qualitative Research

[1] When utilising social media data in qualitative research, only a small percentage of studies have sought institutional approval or explicitly obtained informed consent from participants. Researchers using social media data should be cautious when citing verbatim quotes and should maintain protective strategies to prevent traceability. [2] The use of AI-based transcription services raises ethical and methodological concerns including data ownership and intellectual property management, data repository and flow strategies, real-time nature of interactions, implicit speech bias, and decision-making accountability.

[3] Virtual and digital focus groups offer considerable advantages for qualitative research but require ongoing methodological refinement and clear ethical guidelines, particularly regarding informed consent, data security, power imbalances among participants, and inclusivity for those with limited digital literacy.

[4] Research ethics considerations should foreground minimising harm to all participants in the research process, including transcriptionists who can potentially experience emotional distress and vicarious trauma. Researchers and ethics committees should consider responsibilities regarding do no harm in relation to the wellbeing of all involved. [5] Researchers must ethically and critically engage with concepts of sensitivity and vulnerability, questioning underpinning assumptions throughout longitudinal research, particularly when working with healthcare professionals during crises like pandemics.

Bear in mind, ethical qualitative research requires sustained reflexivity, attentiveness to power dynamics, and commitment to the wellbeing of all involved throughout the entire research process.

We note from RTE today that University of Galway has changed its academic policy in response to AI, and detected 224 cases of unauthorised AI in graded coursework last year. Students need to be clear on how they arrive at their essays and theses.

Niall's Monday tech news bruhs...

Now, this is an interesting development for all us music lovers.

In the United States, southern poet Talisha Jones from Mississippi has secured a multimillion-dollar contract for her AI-generated R&B persona Xania Monet. Yep. AI generatedThis comes after the artist’s music debuted on Billboard’s charts racking up 10M streams in the U.S. in just a week.

The details:
Jones created Monet’s identity using AI tools and uses Suno for music creation. But she claims to use ‘live elements’ and writes all the lyrics herself. Interestingly, multiple labels bid for the artist with some expressing copyright concerns in relation to her state use of Suno. Now, Hallwood Media have emerging form in this space as they also signed another artist a while back; the first known signing of a Suno artist.

We’re at a really strange time in AI and music space, where the the use of tech creates ethical concerns. The reality is that current music creation (or is a more appropriate word, 'generation') models already attain quality levels imperceptible from professional tracks. What will the future of music publishing look like?

There still remains nothing quite as intoxicating as an energised live gig with real people and real instruments.

Niall's Monday Tech News Bruhs...

Anthropic has just agreed to fork out at least $1.5 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit from authors; the first major payout from an AI firm for plundering copyrighted books to feed its models.

The bones of it are stark. Authors discovered Anthropic had hoovered up over seven million pirated titles from shadow libraries like LibGen to train Claude. In June 2025, a federal judge drew a sharp line: training on legally purchased books could count as fair use, but downloading pirated works is outright copyright infringement.

The settlement breaks down to around $3,000 per book for the 500,000 works already identified, with more cash owed if further infringements surface. Anthropic must also wipe every pirated file from its systems. Crucially, this deal doesn’t give them carte blanche for future training.

Now, Why this matters: This is the first precedent-setting cheque in the wave of copyright suits circling the AI labs. The judgement doesn’t tackle the grey zone of so-called fair use, but it nails down piracy as theft, plain and simple. And while $1.5B makes for a headline-grabber, Anthropic’s recent $13B fundraising at a $183B valuation means the sting might feel more like a slap than a knockout. Let's see who remains standing at the end of this assuredly lengthy process...
