🐄 Our Founders: Kieran Supple, Reap Interactive

Based in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, Reap Interactive is an Irish AgTech company using precision livestock technology to help farmers monitor the performance, health and behaviour of every animal, without manual weighing or handling.

Founder Kieran Supple combined his background in technology and data with his own experience of beef farming to build and . These systems track weight gain, water intake, behaviour and early health indicators for individual cattle and calves.

Since moving full-time into the business in 2022, Kieran has taken Reap from R&D to commercial deployment with paying customers in Ireland, the UK and Scotland, with the US market now in sight. The company was also named Overall Winner of the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena at the 2024 National Ploughing Championships. 🏆

Kieran's advice to other founders? Stay close to the problem and your customers, test with real users early, and make use of the support networks available.

Your AI model could be out of date in six months. Is your governance keeping up?
This was one of the key messages at this morning's Executive Breakfast Series: Governing AI – From Opportunity to Accountability.

Dr Eoin Whelan of the University of Galway - J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics of Business & Economics set the tone with a striking figure: only an estimated 30–35% of companies are doing AI governance well. Too often it’s treated as a one-off exercise rather than an ongoing process, and transparency is mistaken for accuracy, when a human in the loop is still essential.

Lee Bristow, Director of Cyber & AI Governance at Saros Consulting, took that further. AI use has outpaced the rules that govern it, and the organisations that will get the most from AI are those building a culture that embraces it while holding it to account.

At WestBIC, we see this tension every day with the founders and SMEs we support. Early-stage companies are often quickest to adopt AI and least likely to have governance in place. But responsible adoption isn’t a brake on innovation. It’s what builds the trust that lets innovation scale.

🌊 Blue Shuttle in Brest!

On 8th October, the Blue Shuttle project, co-financed by Interreg Atlantic Area, held a workshop at Le Quartz in Brest on “Leveraging European Networks to Boost Blue Biotechnology Solutions”. It presented Blue Shuttle and MARINNONET and showed how transnational innovation networks drive competitiveness and sustainability in blue biotechnology.

The consortium also held a final meeting in Brest to review progress and discuss the project’s outcomes. Thank you to Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique for organising the workshop and for the warm welcome!
