Just serviced a Commercial Fire System today. Has to be done again in 6 Months. Did you know commercial fire systems are required to be serviced 2-4 times a year depending on the size of the system.

I guess no thinks a fire happen to them. Human nature I guess. My advice: have it tested, don't take it for granted. Your life and the lives of others may depend on it.

For anyone who has mains/battery detectors in their homes read the guide below on how to test your fire detectors for yourself. Anyone who hasn't get some.

Testing your smoke alarm
You can test them by pressing the test button. If you can't reach the test button, use the handle tip of a sweeping brush to press it.

Replacing batteries
You should replace the batteries with new ones: when the old ones aren't workingas soon as you hear the warning beep once a year in standard alarms. Replace batteries immediately if they are not working. Do not put it off.
Keeping the alarm clean
Vacuum the smoke alarms regularly and wipe the cover. If they get clogged with dust they may not work properly.

Replacing your alarm
There is an expiry date on smoke alarms. Replace the whole alarm when it reaches this expiry date. If you have a 10-year smoke alarm, you need to replace it after 10 years.

Carbon monoxide alarms
You also need to have carbon monoxide alarms in your home.
Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen with gas, oil, coal or other fuels. You can't see or smell carbon monoxide.

Statistics on Burglaries in Domestic Houses

Main entry points a burglar gained access to a house
- Front Door 34%
- Rear Door 25%
- Rear Window 20%

Burglary Prevention Advice

TOP 5 TIPS
- Secure all doors and windows. 1 in 5 burglars gain access through
an unsecured door or window
- Light up your home
- Use your alarm even when home.
- Store keys safely and away from windows & letterboxes.
- Record details of valuables and don’t keep large cash amounts at
home.

Types of protection available. Devices typically fall into two categories – Perimeter such as Contact or Shock sensors which detect attempted or forced entry on a door or window and Trap Protection such as motion sensor (PIR) which will detect the presence of an intruder only when they have gained access.

Perimeter Protection (RECOMMENDED) This where a building is protected with devices located on external doors and windows. Triggering the alarm at the point of entry by the burglar(s). Vibration shock sensor are recommeded on all ground floor and roof access windows.

Trap Protection (NOT RECOMMENDED without perimter protection) This type of protection comprises devices internal to the building such as motion detectors and is more suitable to a building which is unoccupied while the system is armed.

At Wicklow Alarms we recommened the ideal protection is a combination of both whereby the perimeter of the property is protected to ensure early detection and warning of intrusion attempts. This also offers Superior protection at the nighttime when the system is armed while you and your loves ones are asleep as all external entry points are protected and you can be alerted before the burglar(s) have gained entry.
