Three weeks ago I posted a page with the next four Fridays on it, and one of them was ringed in red. A VAT bill, €2,450, due today. Well, today came. And here’s the whole story…..nothing happened. The money was sitting in the VAT pot, moved in €127 slices every Friday since July, and the scariest Friday of the month turned out to be the most boring one.

That’s five minutes a week.

Seen three weeks early, a big bill is a plan. Seen on the day, it’s a crisis. Same bill, same money, different Friday entirely.

So tonight’s five minutes, same as always…..the VAT slice into the pot, 30% for tax, the receipts into the September folder, and write out your next four Fridays, what’s coming in, what’s due out.

Somewhere on that page is your version of this bill. Find it now, and three weeks from today you get to post your own boring Friday.

The Break-Even number. The one nobody ever taught us 🧡

Here’s what it is, in plain English: the amount your business must take in each week to cover EVERYTHING, every bill, every bag of stock, every subscription... and your wage. Because you are a bill too. The most important one.

The maths is genuinely this simple: all your monthly costs, plus the wage you WANT (not the scraps you’re settling for), divided by 4.33 weeks. That’s your number.

Beat it? You’re in profit. Miss it? You’re paying to work, and the gap usually comes quietly out of YOUR wage without you ever noticing. That’s how so many of us end up busy but broke.

Right, deep breath, because her mam being your best client is making you afraid of the wrong thing.

Two no-shows in a fortnight isn’t bad luck, it’s a pattern, and every empty slot cost you real money you’ll never get back.

So Saturday goes ahead on one condition- a deposit.

Message her tonight, and here are the words!

Hiya! Just to secure Saturday for you, I take a small deposit on bookings now, it comes straight off the price on the day.’

That’s it. No lecture about the no-shows, no guilt, the deposit does all the talking. If she pays it, she’ll show, deposits are magic that way. If she vanishes, she was never coming anyway and you just got your Saturday slot back.

And her mam? Her mam runs her own life on common sense.

She’ll respect you more, not less.

Do the maths on his fade! fifteen euro, take out the rent, the light, the blades, the insurance, and he’s cutting hair for buttons. He either burns out or closes, and you’ll still be there.

Your regulars aren’t paying €22 for a haircut, they’re paying for YOUR chair, your chat, the way their fade is right every single time.
