Lovely stroll around the meadows at Martello Tower Sutton this evening.

We have a foraging walk there this Saturday the 20th Magical Martello tour.

What we spotted Burnet moths, ladybirds, slugs, bumblebees, speckled wood butterfly, pied hoverflies.

Plants , red & white clover, common hogw**d, wild carrot, sorrels, birds foot trefoil, silver w**d, elderflower, plantain, blackberry blossoms, burdock, dock and lots more!

Birds - swifts, wood pigeons, warblers, finches, rens, blackbirds, heard curlews...

One of my favourite places for native plants and wildlife.

What an amazing day. We'd a smaller group today, sometimes the best things come in small packages.

I had the best day with my old pal David visiting from Oz with Owen and the gorgeous people who are Sarah & Dan joined our foraging tour. We packed in a lot in two and a half hours, covering the amazing medicinal & culinary properties of our native plants. We visited some non natives too, and amazingly Owen was drawn to the Tasmanian flax-lily, and guess where he's from!! You see plants do talk to us!!!!

We had a lovely foraging walk and little picnic enjoying my elderflower, orange & lemon, brownies with sea salt & mugwort tips. Washed down with elderflower cordial. Thumbs up all round 👍

David, Owen and I then walked the grounds of Howth castle and met with the lovely Caroline at the castle. A walk up hill led us to the Deerpark bar & Golf club where we enjoyed a G&T. Did you know they have an amazing BBQ on the weekends open to the public? Foods savage 😋

We strolled to the Dolmen and my youngest joined us, paying dues to Aideens grave, we enjoyed the magical space and talked of days of old.
The connections with the neolithic tombs from Howth to Tara, Knowth & Dowth, Newgrange. Tales of the beautiful Beann of Eadir and Queen Eadir herself. As folklore goes
the tomb is known as Aideen’s Grave. Étaín Fholthinn (daughter of a local chieftain named Aengus) married Oscar, son of Oisín and grandson of Fionn MacCumhaill. On hearing of Oscar’s death at the Battle of Gabhra (near the Hill of Tara) in 284AD, she died of a broken heart and Oisín caused the tomb to be built in her honour (credit Howth castle).

Irelands Eye Foraging Experience

1st one of 2026 and what an amazing day it was. We set sail at 12.45 and had a lovely boat trip with Mark Doyle our skipper from Howth Cliff cruises. Landing on Ireland's Eye we explored the designated pathways, learning about the medicinal & edible native plants that live on the island.
The flora and fauna did not disappoint, sea campion, ground ivy, dead nettles, common hogw**d, dock, Mallows, burdock, speedwell to name a few.

Ladybirds, bumblebees, hoverflies, butterflies - painted ladies, baby black back gulls, puffins, Guillemots, turns, cormorants, seals and Seaw**d and so much more.

We enjoyed a organic & foraged picnic on the beach with Elderflower cordial and the best bread and crackers from with Kerry gold butter 🧈

We were collected by Ollie at 4.15 and he kindly navigated us around the back of the island. Wow we were spoilt with the most amazing sights of the Bird sanctuary that is Irelands eye.

Beautiful Sunet this evening over Dublin.

This evening I had an interesting encounter with a crab spider camouflaged in my white roses!

The first photo was taken in 2023 when a crab spider had grasped a honey bee on a rose in the garden and injected it with it's deadly venom, paralysing it's prey!

There are over 2100 species of crab spiders around the world. Crab spiders are unique in that they have two longer legs, their bodies are typically short, wide, and flat. They have varied Abdomens. The abdomen can range from round or oval to angular and pentagonal. They use their long strong legs to grasp their prey and then inject them with their venom.

They come in many colours mainly white, green to orange! Some change colour depending on what they are residing on. Like the guy today it was camouflaged into the white rose. Waiting to hunt the next poor unfortunate victim.

They are a rose gardens best pal as their preferred food is greenfly.
