πŸŽ‰ 2 Years in Business – A Milestone Worth Celebrating! πŸŽ‰

This week marks a very special achievement for Reid Safety & Consultancy, 2 years in business and, equally importantly, my first full week working in the business full-time.

What started as a vision to provide practical, professional, and client-focused health and safety support has grown into a trusted consultancy serving businesses across a wide range of industries throughout Ireland.

Over the past two years, I've had the privilege of working with fantastic clients in farming, telecoms, hospitality, retail, motor trade, veterinary, industrial, and many other sectors. Every project, site visit, audit, training session, and conversation has helped shape the business into what it is today.

Taking the step to commit to Reid Safety & Consultancy full-time is both exciting and rewarding. It's a reflection of the support from clients, colleagues, friends, and family who have believed in the business from the beginning.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted Reid Safety & Consultancy with their health and safety needs. Your support has made this milestone possible, and I'm looking forward to continuing to help businesses create safer workplaces for years to come.
Here's to the next chapter and many more milestones ahead! πŸš€

🚜 Silage Season is Here – Stay Safe on Our Roads 🚜

As silage season is underway across Ireland, our rural roads become much busier with tractors, trailers, forage harvesters, and agricultural machinery moving between fields.

⚠️ Key Risks During Silage Season:

πŸ”Ή Young and Inexperienced Drivers Many young drivers are helping with silage operations for the first time. While their enthusiasm is invaluable, lack of experience can increase the risk of incidents involving machinery, reversing operations, and road travel.

πŸ”Ή Long Working Hours Silage season often means early starts and late finishes to make the most of weather windows. Fatigue can slow reaction times, impair judgement, and increase the likelihood of accidents both on the farm and on the road.

πŸ”Ή Busy Rural Roads Large agricultural vehicles may travel at lower speeds and require extra space to manoeuvre. Motorists should be prepared for: β€’ Slow-moving vehicles around bends and hills. β€’ Mud or debris on road surfaces. β€’ Wide machinery occupying more than one lane. β€’ Frequent turning into field entrances.

πŸ”Ή Pressure to Get the Job Done Weather conditions can create pressure to work quickly. However, no crop is worth risking a life. Taking shortcuts with safety procedures can have devastating consequences.

βœ… Safety Reminders β€’ Plan work and allow adequate rest breaks. β€’ Ensure drivers are trained, competent, and appropriately licensed. β€’ Wear seatbelts where fitted. β€’ Use beacons, lights, and reflective markings correctly. β€’ Keep mobile phone use to an absolute minimum while driving. β€’ Slow down and be patient when meeting farm machinery on the road. β€’ Always check mirrors and blind spots before turning or manoeuvring.

🌾 Everyone has a role to play in making silage season safe. Whether you're a farmer, contractor, worker, or road user, take your time, stay alert, and look out for one another.

🚜 Farm Safety Week – Let’s Make Every Day a Safe Day on the Farm 🚜

This week, the Health and Safety Authority is highlighting the importance of staying safe while working in one of Ireland’s most hazardous industries β€” farming.

Farms are not just workplaces, they are homes and family environments. Taking a few extra minutes to plan a job safely can prevent serious injuries and save lives.

πŸ”Ή Check machinery before use
πŸ”Ή Never take shortcuts with PTOs or guards
πŸ”Ή Be aware of livestock behaviour
πŸ”Ή Avoid fatigue and rushing jobs
πŸ”Ή Keep children and vulnerable persons away from work areas
πŸ”Ή Use the correct PPE for every task

Safety isn’t seasonal β€” it’s part of good farming.

Stay safe. Look out for one another.

β˜€οΈ Sun Exposure is a Workplace Health & Safety Risk

Outdoor workers in Ireland are exposed to UV radiation, even on cloudy days. This can increase the risk of sunburn, eye damage, premature skin ageing and skin cancer.

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must manage workplace risks and protect employees’ health, safety and welfare. For outdoor work, this includes considering sun exposure in risk assessments.

Employers should:

βœ… Check the UV index
βœ… Plan work outside peak UV hours where possible
βœ… Provide shade and drinking water
βœ… Rotate tasks to reduce direct sun exposure
βœ… Provide suitable PPE, including hats, long sleeves, sunglasses and SPF30+ sunscreen
βœ… Give workers information and training on sun safety

Workers should remember the SunSmart 5 S’s:

Slip on covering clothing
Slop on SPF30+ sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Seek shade
Slide on sunglasses

Sun safety is part of good workplace health and safety management.

If your team works outdoors, review your risk assessments and controls now.

15/04/2026

Workplace safety isn’t just about slips, trips, and machinery β€” it’s also about how we treat each other.

Violence, aggression, and workplace stress are very real risks across all industries in Ireland β€” from offices and retail to farms, salons, and frontline services.

Under Irish health and safety legislation, employers have a duty to protect not only physical wellbeing, but also mental health and psychological safety at work.

πŸ’¬ Violence & Aggression
This includes verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, or physical harm β€” whether from customers, clients, or even colleagues.
No one should feel unsafe simply doing their job.

⚠️ Workplace Stress
Excessive workloads, lack of support, poor communication, or unclear roles can all lead to stress β€” and over time, serious health issues.

βœ… What should workplaces be doing?

- Carrying out risk assessments that include psychosocial hazards
- Putting clear reporting procedures in place
- Providing training on conflict management and de-escalation
- Promoting a culture of respect, support, and open communication

🏑 And remember β€” these issues don’t stop at the workplace. Stress and negative interactions can follow us home, affecting our personal lives, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

Creating safer environments starts with awareness, but it’s built through action.

If your workplace hasn’t addressed these risks yet β€” now is the time.
